Two deer with 500 S&W Mag.
« on: December 29, 2003, 08:25:58 PM »
I took my 500 deer hunting this year in Ohio and I got two deer.
I mounted an Ultra-Dot red dot sight in Weigand Combat handgun's Integramount system. Replaced the rubber Hogue grips with custom Jordan Trooper's from Herrett's, much nicer and more functional.
I had a 400gr. FPPB mold made to my specs. from Mountain Molds, I'm very pleased with the mold.
I'm loading 44grs. of W. 296, CCI-350 primers, and Jamison brass, with this bullet. It chronographs 1668fps. over my Oehler 35-P.
The buck was shot at about 60yds. tried to scramble up a bank and fell next to tree. The doe was shot at between 40 to 45yds. and dropped.
Of course no bullets were recovered, .50 cal. holes thru and thru.
As usual in an hunting sitsuiation, I don't even remember any recoil.
However, I did wear my sylincio?(spl.) ear plugs, the kind where you can hear normal sounds, but close to loud bangs. It is loud. If I knew how to post pictures on here I would send a pic. I posted a pic on the Beartooth shooter's forum if you are interested. I'd like to hear from anyone else who used their 500 to take game.
BTW, the only problem I have had with the 500, is I ordered the carbide sizing die from Lee, and it chipped up after sizing about ten cases. I sent it back, and they are sending me a new one, we'll see how this one works.

Jerry did you have to send in your gun to Herrett's? I called them and they told my I need to send the gun to them to make sure it got a good fit.  Also congratulation on the 2 deer :). You sure are pushing that 400 gr. bullet. I am loading the 400 gr. from Leadhead with 34.5 gr. of W296. It has a good kick to it, I could only imagine 44 gr. of W296. I see it is 4 gr. over Hodgdon's Max load using H110, which is basically the same as W296.  Have you noticed any over pressure on the brass?
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Redhawk1,
No I didn't send my gun in, the grips fit really tight. Maybe they have had some trouble though, I don't know. As far as the load goes, I used data from Corbons data for their 400gr. load they published on their web site.
My mold throws 400grs. using Lyman #2 mix, but I use more linotype to make the bullets harder, and they actually come out at 386grs. The cases practically fall out, and the primers look fine. I see no over pressure signs at all. Hodgdon list 44grs. as a start load for the 370gr. CPB GC bullet, and 47grs. as max. So I don't think my load is that hot. I've had no problems.
