Finally success with the 22 Hornet

After a full year of working on it, a trip back to H&R and over 300 rounds of ammo, I finally got the 22 Hornet to shoot. I had all but given up on the little gun, even went so far as looking at a replacement for it. Well I gave it one more try. 2 weeks ago I did not have any 40 gr. bullets when doing my testing, I did have 34, 35, 45 and 50 gr. bullets. I picked up a box of 40 gr. v-max and loaded both IMR 4227 and Lil'Gun, slow to fast. I knew I was on to something right away. Groups were better than ever. At 2500fps both powders shot well under 1/2" at 100yds. Loaded up some more and the same thing, groups tightened up as aproached that speed and then opened back up after I passed it. I am HAPPY!!!! I think with a little more work I can make one ragged hole, if "I" can shoot that well. JamesIII

My 22hornet handi shoots great groups and I've never done anything to it. I shoot 45gr. Remington factory ammo. :-\
Why was yours shooting poorly? Was there a problem with the barrel? You usually don't hear bad things about the hornet's.

Spanky, I noticed a little movement in the barrel last spring. It was so slight that I had several people look at it to verify that it was loose. I then contacted H&R and they tightened it up and did a trigger job on it while it was there. When I was shooting the good groups yesterday, I was doing everything wrong. There was a nice crosswind, I supported the Handi at the muzzle end of the forend and was shooting off bags, not my normal shooting rest. The consistency of the groups was what suprised me. They were just under 1", tightened up as I got to the sweet spot and then opened back up to 1". I shot all 4 shot groups, both the IMR 4227 and the Lil Gun shot 3 touching and one not when I got to the sweet spot, .382-.422" including the "flier". It sure feels good to have this worked out. You might want to mic those bullets for dia. to see what the barrel is really liking. The bullets for old Hornets ran .223ish and newer 'usually' .224ish. You want it for future reference. Also, if I remember right, Sierra makes .223 and .224 'Hornet' 40gr.
