While I disliked the short barrels on all models for several years, the Birds head Vaquero started growing on me so I picked one up a few years ago. Immediate likes were the way it balances in hand and the pointability.

Sessions at the range went the same way which kind of rubbed me the wrong way because I knew that this bratty little kid brother to my full size Vaquero was just trying to get me to take it deer hunting.

I started feeding it loads that I thought it would not like but had no such luck as it continued to shoot on par with my 7-1/2". It was at this point that I realized that when you have the sight picture down, barrel lenght in a hand gun does not really make that much difference whether it would happen to be 3-7/8" or longer. This is arguable and has been discussed here before but is the side that I stand on.

Congratulations on your purchase!...My Birds head is a constant companion for chores ranging from trimming up shooting lanes to scouting new areas. I cannot take her deer hunting cause a 4" bbl is mandatory but the Birds head will never get sold or traded.

P.S. and Uncle Mikes #2 holster works great for general field carry through those briar's n brambles. I wear mine crossdraw.

Congrats sureshot;  Nice looking Birds Head, and the short bbl does have a way of growing on you. 8)

Mine seems to like a lighter touch on the grips (read make sure to let it roll back in your hand) The heaviest loads that I have shot were some 300gr @ 900fps with the results being self described as a "pleasant little pop-gun" to shoot as per the overall weight of the revolver. It is not too heavy as you know but has the good, solid, feeling of a quality arm. Not too light of a grip though or that hammer will come back and bite the web of your hand.

My so called "little birds head" is quite deadly on groundhog size game and up out to 60yds which I consider to be very generous in field conditions for the size of the arm. The power & penetration of the .45 Colt goes without saying.

Cool little iron there.  I think in my paw, that tiny handle would get lost, however.  Even my NMB is too small.  8(

I hope that Ruger sees fit to bring out the 'New' Vaquero ala Montado with a rounded butt.  That would be a sweety gun!  44 Man

been looking at holsters
thinking abt going with blade tech owb
gonna see if the hole positions of the adjustable loops will interchange with the "j" type hooks of the iwb
i know its not leather but kydex would keep from adding weight to an already heavyish gun
