798/799

I was wondering if Remington already discontinued the 798 and 799.  It seems it wasn't too long ago that they started importing those barreled actions.

Yep...they're discontinued.  There should still be some in the supply chain if you're looking for one.  But Remington is not importing them anymore.  In fact, a cursory look at the website shows only one import gun in their inventory...the model Five.

Wonder who's gonna take over this line this time? Charles Daly had them prior to Remington, and Interarms was before that.
If Remington had marketed them a little better, they'd have sold a little better. I've not yet been able to put my hands on one of them. None of the local gunstores carry them. None of the Big Box Stores either. All would be glad to order one for ya, but expect ya to pay for it before you even get your hands on it.

I had heard that the line was discontinued because Remington management wanted to consolidate some of their product lines rather than poor sales.  Not to mention, there were a lot of great reviews written about them.  I would hope that Charles Daly will pick them up again, but who knows.  There may be some animosity since the Zastava factory was so quick to jump in bed with Remington.  It's a shame, though.  They are nice rifles, and I was hoping to pick one up in .222 or something.  However, I haven't seen any locally and it looks like I probably wont.

I picked up a 799 in .223rem last month at Bass Pro; they had them on sale for 369.00 Mine shooting about an 1" @ 100 yds, best I can do with the horrible trigger. Feels like you pull for ever before the dang thing goes boom. I'm going to order a timney trigger for it.

Just wondering...what kind of ammo did you use to get 1" @ 100yards?

Last week I tested mine (.223) using Remington AccuTip-V 55gr  (Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40mm) and I was getting 1" @ 200 yards and a bit under, without trigger work or anything else.  Bone stock!  Cold or hot barrel, it didn't make any difference.  Love it!  Shoots better than my Browning A Bolt in the same cal.
Yes...they could have done a better job on the trigger but there is an easy fix to that.  Get the Timney trigger.

These are well made rifles...and IMO, they are better than most Remington 700 models.

They are ok rifles, but not even close to the Model 700.

Well...everyone I know who has these "mauser clones" made by Zastava never complained about accuracy or blueing getting damaged due to handling or weather conditions.  On the other hand, many people complained about Remington's blueing (not accuracy I have to admit).  Not to mention that I can get less than 1" groups @ 200 yards out of box.  Blueing on my 799 looks rich. When it comes to Remongton 700...yeah on CDL but look at the price tag.  CDL is awesome but not cheap.
I was looking at Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .223 (26" barrel) few months ago thinking it would be something cool to own but I was not impressed. Buleing is terrible (looks like sh..) , the barrel is 26" long and probably 5x havier than the stock. It just doesn't feel right when you are holding it. I don't understand why 26" barrel? For .223 Remington?  What is the purpose of 26" barrel?  You are not going to get anything out of it since .223 is not a long range cal. anyways. What a POS!  IMO you can get away with 20" barrel and have the same groups at 200-300 yards without any problems using just the regular sporting barrel.

Swampman give me at least one good reason, why do you think they are not even close to Model 700?  Just don't say because model 700 is made in US.

That big honking extractor ensures that a Mauser can never shoot with the 700.  The 798/799s are (were) nice discount rifles.  The fit and finish of 798/799 has been the subject of much internet criticism.  They were not as bad as most people claimed they were.

the extractor means nothing to the accuracy of the rifle.

The tension it places on the rim of the cartridge is the reason.

Thank you 351 power.  That's what I was trying to explain to swampman.
These are excellent rifles and the price is right.  I'm also going to get one in 7,62x39mm.

With Timney trigger and a varmint scope I'm sure I could get groups less than 1/2" @ 200yards. What more do you want from a rifle that costs $370, yet it has better value than many of the 700 models?  Pick any 700 model (not CDL) and put it beside model 799 and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I'm also interested in model 798  .308 or .300 Win Mag.  My friend has one in .270 and it is deadly accurate.

Thumbs up!  Great buy!

BGD,
I haven't shot one of these but have been shooting my MarkX 243 for almost 30 years. Where accuracy is concerned , it's never shot any load put through it that went over 1.5 inches. I had a 300mag that was even better, but ran into some money woes and away it went.
These rifles weren't meant to compete against the 700, in my opinion. They offered a quality, hard to hurt and strong actioned rifle that'll keep on going. Some said that the bolts were sloppy and the fit wasn't all that good but this is the way Mauser actions have always been. My MarkX has the original trigger that's fully adjustable and is set to 2lbs. One of those ''mini mausers'' should be fun to play with.

My 2cents worth...

They quit importing them because they didn't sell well and it wasn't profitable.

I like my 799 and I'll probably buy one more in 7,62x39mm.
Waiting for 798 SS to come out...
