S&W 629 Classic?
« on: December 29, 2003, 07:24:53 AM »
Anyone here ever shot a S&W modle 629 classic with a 5" barrel?
I was looking at this as I might order one of these 44 mags.
I was lookign at the 4" but I like the way the 5" looks better.
THanks for your thuaghts and suggestions. :D

I have one but believe they are out of the catalog now. I really like mine . I also happen to like 5" barreled guns. Mine is a soft shooter as a quote went . Compact enough to be out of the way in a belt holster and long enough to have a decent sight radius. If you get a chance to get one snag it !!! I have found mine to like the lighter bullets better than the heavy stuff but GREAT gun all around.

I had one and liked it. Utah hunting laws in the passed required a 6" so I traded it off. NOW it all about muzzle velocity and ft. lbs.  Would work now. I have the 6 1/2 classic and 4" mtn gun. The 4" goes with me most of the time in a high ride holster.

I've shot my buddies 5" Model 29 Classic (obviously blued and not stainless is the difference).    It was a great shooter....including the endurance package and the accurizing work that they put into the 'Classics'.     Yes, I'd get one, but with a little bit longer barrel, preferably, and I'd also get one if I didn't plan on shooting the absolute heaviest of .44 mag' loads like one can do out of a Ruger.    The 'Classic' will take much more than the orignal Model 29 ever could -- because of its endurance package -- but it still would make sense to me to load for it within SAAMI spec's and not do any "experimenting" outside the envelope, so to speak.

Good shooting and good hunting to you.

Well that answers my questions.
On the Smith web site the 5" classic is still there right above the 4" so I think its still available.
Also this isnt a hunting gun its a self+home protection weapon- carry-truck gun as well, I dont hunt so I think the 5 inch is fine for my purpose.
Thanks again for all your answers and help.
