.338 Federal Handi
« on: June 28, 2010, 07:23:24 PM »
Are there any inherent problems with reboring a .308 to .338 Fed?  I made an impulse buy on the classifieds a while back (syn/camo scope combo .308 handi) cause it was a great deal and it has gotten zero playing time so far.  The .338 fed would be a lot more useful to me I believe.  Anyone else here got one?

Not the 338 Federal..but a few of us have had the 338-06 A-square done up by Wayne York with excellent results. It's just a re-bore and neck ream job on a 308 Barrel and shouldn't be a problem..provided the 308 chamber is within spec's. I was going to have one done..but elected to have my 30-06 done by Wayne instead. Should make a dandy rifle..

i thought about the 338-06 too but it seemed like the 338 fed would be more efficient in a short, say 18" barrel.  I love short, handy handis!

More efficient..yes and no..but certainly more "handi" if your after a short barrel.IMHO another good choice for the shorter barrel conversions is the 358 Winchester..I think both would make excellent Handi's..You got more factory ammo selection with the new Federal..but the 358 Winchester is no slouch and worthy of a close look if you haven't yet.

Either the 338 Federal or 338-06 would be an excellent choice.

If you hand load then ammo isn’t a problem in the least bit, but if not then the 338 Federal ammo is cheaper.

I hand load my 338-06 A-Square using once fired 30-06 Springfield brass with excellent results, but that’s in a Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight, not a Handi.
