striker replacement

  Got a great deal on one missing the striker ,ordered the part ,put it in, won't fire, after a lot of tinkering looking and testing. I discovered why it is listed as factory replacement only. The thickness of the striker and the contact of the hammer on the frame control the firing pin protrusion on a handi, replacing either the hammer or the striker will require some file work to get it to fire consistently. I would suggest test firing primed cases  to check some are bound to be too thick resulting in pierced primers, if too thin as mine was you need to file the hammer face to get more protrusion.

Yes, the transfer bar's tech name is lifter and striker, or striker/lifter.

Thanks Tim. 

I think the lifter/striker is the problem on my SB2 with the FTFs on the heavy recoil loads.  It seems it is rotating towards the back of the receiver after firing a heavy round, then the first hammer strike puts it in the correct position and the second strike fires the round.  I am going to leave it on the 223 and not work on it unless it starts acting up on the lighter recoiling rounds.

Flip it forward after cocking the hammer, see if it fires on the first hammer fall.

Just thinkin' out loud:
Has anyone tried silver-soldering the top portion of that onto the hammer nose to make a one piece unit?

How about removing the striker and doing a weld build up on the hammer?  Back to the old days when you carried your single shot unloaded until you needed to shoot it.  Course wouldn't be a safe gun without the transfer bar? ;D  Least is doesn't have a safety on the side of the receiver like a certain south of the border break-action.

Thats basically what Im getting at......the top portion already has the right shape so it wouldnt need as much rework as a weld and file.
My old Ithaca Mdl 49 .22LR, had no transfer bar, nor the old H&Rs or Iver Johnson shotguns, along with how many others. I believe Ive read of using the old hammer on a newer model here too.

The older hammers had half cock notches which is nice, if the hammer is resting against the firing pin instead of on half cock, the pin sticks out of the breech face. The heel of the extractor/ejector must be shaped to push the pin back as the action is closed instead of breaking it off or damaging it, at least so far it hasn't happened on the 6.5x55 and 45-120. Unfortunately, the hammer doesn't rebound.

Good point!
If I ever get a jumble to mess with I might see if cutting a rebound would work. Without it, and other rifles to mess up my mind, surely I would forget to pull the hammer back a bit before opening.
Oh well, I'll just keep working on my trigger follow through......
