Send Barrel And receiver back for fitting
« on: June 25, 2010, 04:12:24 PM »
Does anyone know if you send H&R a barrel from another gun that you own as well as a different receiver you own if they will fit it for a charge. have a 223 i would like to use on a spare receiver that seems to be a very good fit but just doesn't lock up.

They will not.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

If it doesn't lock up and fits tight, it may be pretty easy to fit it yourself.

You shouldn't have to worry about shimming and once fitted it would be like a factory fit.

Try smoking the latch and see how much if any if the latch catches at all?

Sometimes a light stroking with a stone on the latch shelf is all that's needed. and if it's really tight, you may need to sand the pin pivot on the barrel lug.

It's always better and easier to fit a barrel that you have to take some material off of, than to have to put it back with a shim or epoxy.

Check the FAQ's on barrel fitting, and just take it really slow and check the fit often.  Slow is the key!

Yes, they will and have before, but only if the underlug has sufficient material for them to cut it to fit,  if they can't, they'll just send it back to you unfitted and you're out shipping costs both ways. Best advice is fit it yourself if you're unsure. Swampman sent a frame and a second hand 45-70 barrel into Ilion, they fitted it and returned it to him.

If all else fails, Wayne York will fit one for $50. I'm sure there will be some exceptions though.

Thanks, Dinny

They did mine and returned it for free.  Of course it depends on what the fitting problem is as mentioned by others.

thanks for the help. It took me about 1 hr but it went well. Filled a little off the latch end and rounded the connection to the barrel and receiver a little at a time and I got a good lock up. You here the latch catch when it colses. No space at the head at all nice and tight. Is there anything else I should be looking for when together.

I had the same issue with my 7mm-08 barrel on a new frame just recently.  It would lock, but pop open on firing.  I smoked the latch shelf and saw it had mimimal engagement and took some off with a stone.  End of problem.  It locks up tight on a .002 feeler (I don't have a .001) and the latch has about half play when locked up.....and it shoots.  I'm happy.
