30-06 Handi-Rifle Felt Recoil
« on: June 24, 2010, 06:19:20 AM »
Thinking about a Handi-Rifle in 30-06 and I know how much a Bolt Action kicks. I was wondering about the felt recoil in a handi-Rifle 30-06 ?

I have the H@R in 30-06 I reload so I am not near max: charges my pet load FPS runs around 2400 using 165 sp bullet.I update the stock to a thumbhole
which had a upgraded recoil pad really does help to take up the recoil I am sure Tim: will tell you the one to get.

With equal loads and equal rifle weight the recoil will be the same, others things that affect recoil are a gas system and muzzle break.  Stock design can affect felt recoil.

I think you'll find the synthetic stocked 30-06 to have a bit more recoil due to less weight, specially if the steel bar in the stock has been removed which was standard on the old style syn stock, the newer checkered syn stock has a better recoil pad than the old style ventilated H&R pad, wood stocked Handis weigh a little more, both of my 30-06s Handis have laminated stocks which helps even more, one is an Ultracomp which isn't really a good comparison tho, it has even less recoil and muzzle jump due to the brake.

I added weight to the new Handi-Grip stock with the new recoil pad on it on my 26" 30-06 and it shoots like a light loaded 30-30 from the bench...both the factory 180 & 150 grain loads are very enjoyable to shoot with mine ;D

As Mac said, the Handi-Grip's pad is a nice, soft pad, it's the nicest pad of any of H&R's, very close to a Limbsaver, maybe even better.  ;)

Wayne told me he thought is was made by Limbsaver..since that's who is doing their R3 pad http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=991815 makes sense to me since it's the exact same one as what comes with the thumb hole grip stock that they make for my 870 ;) ;)http://www.remington.com/~/media/Files/Catalogs/2009/Remington_09Catalog_Shotguns.ashx What I just saw on this link was they have a kit that you can lengthen the stock for a better fit..since I switched my pad off of the 870 and tried it on the Handi (fits perfectly)..this will work for them as well...Ha HA...chalk another one up for the Handi...Thanks Big Green ;D

That's great, a cost savings measure that's also a good product instead of something less than desired!!

Yup..that's what I was thinking on yours.. ;)

I've always felt some of the 30-06 ammo kicked rather hard in most guns, but this was because of the stock design on many of them. The worst one I had was a old Springfield with a metal butt plate..This thing rattled me more than shooting my bruiser loads out of a unmodified Handi :o :o
The standard o6' Handi I had wasn't nearly as bad,but it still had the old style recoil pad on them too..They can be rather stout depending on the load shot with them..KRex if you get a wood stocked 30-06 Handi with the old style ventalated pad on it..you might want to pick up one of Remingtons R3 pads for it and fit it too it.Midway sells them..as well as the regular Limbsavers..They work a lot better than the old style pads.

Mac, my dad carried the 03 Springfield in WWI in France.  He kept it pristine, and when he mustered out, he thought he'd have to account for it by serial number.  He could have picked one up on the battlefield and turned that one in.  All they did was march them by and toss them in a pile.  I wish I had that rifle today.

An off topic side note, my Mom's 98 and is in a Veteran's Home.  She's believed to be the oldest WWI widow....and....she's doing fine....hangin in there.

I've got a Handi '06 with a synthetic stock and it's pretty much a pussy cat.......it's got 30 ounces of #4 in a stocking in the stock.

My -06 and .223 switch barrel receiver has just the plain synthetic pistol grip stock. I just shoot 130 grain bullets in mine and it's recoil is not bad at all. If you go to larger grain bullets the felt recoil goes up in my experiences. I'm looking at buying the Dicks camo type stock and forend and this should have the nicer recoil pad on it.

I don't think the Dick's stock has the same pad as the Handi-Grip, the black version doesn't, I compared them today, they won't swap either. But the checkered syn monte carlo stock does have a better pad than the old vented type.

I have a standard Handi in 30-06.  In my openion it's a pussy cat on recoil.  I shoot some pretty hot loads through it.  With the 165gr I'm pushing well over 2900fps.  I'm using reloader-22.  With 180gr I'm close to 2800fps.  Yes others think it kicks hard, but to me it's nothing.  Bullet weight and velocity has a direct relation to recoil.  The heavier the bullet and the higher the velocity the harder the recoil.

But recoil is subjective, it affects differant people in differant ways.  I'm 6'2" and 250lbs, I hardly notice it with my 30-06 Handi.  When my neighbor Russ touches it off he steps back, the gun jumps up, and he looks stunned.  Russ is 5'11" and weighs maybe 150 lbs.  When Sky shoots it, he rocks back, but the gun does not jump up.  Sky is 5'6" and weighs 160 lbs.  But Sky is a body builder, and is solid muscle.  Lots of padding in those shoulders, Russ ani't got that padding and it hurts him.  As for me Fat squishes.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I asked when I was first getting my Handi-Grip stocks and found out you can order them from Remington..but they ain't cheap..They quoted me around $30 for one.

Your right Rog..the heavier faster bullet will always kick more..I got some 2700 fps factory 210 A-max's ordered..can't wait to see how eay those are on the shoulder ;)

Tim, Thanks for letting me know that info. I'll still probably invest in the Dicks type stock set as you had previously mentioned that it would work with my .223 superlight barrel also. Hopefully it won't affect accuracy, but you just never know.
