A Pilgrim's first time out.
« on: May 26, 2010, 10:09:20 AM »
A young neighbor who farms my place just stopped by to discuss what we wanted to do.  He's of the family with the severe wolf problem.....Killing calves between the house and the barn.  I went and got the .223 Handi, and asked him to try a shot.  He said he never shot a rifle before.  I told him to kneel at the porch rail and sight on the 300 yard gong.  At first he couldn't figure out the eye relif on the scope.  Then he did and he didn't know how to cock it.  Of course he had his finger in the trigger guard, so I corrected him on that and then showed him how to cock it.  After "I'm wobbleing all over" for about 5 minutes, the rifle went bang.....ding.  He hit it. ;D  I said "There, that's what you guys need on the farm."  I enjoyed looking at a very huge smile.  I may have made a new Handiholic.

Pete,

I got an idea for a new business.

Pete's U.P. Critter Control.

Get an old VW Bug and mount a handi on the roof.  Help out your neighbors by thinning the predator herd a bit.

I can't believe these folks.  They own/rent/control at least 1000 acres and never have owned a rifle or a shotgun.  Over the last twenty years, I have been their "hired gun".  I have shot everything from crows, starlings, pigeons and woodchucks to fox, coyote and horses, sheep, hogs and cattle.  I WILL NOT shoot  wolves for them.  I don't need that headache.  If it were my livestock it would be different.  I'd shoot to protect my critters and worry about DNR later.

I do, and I enjoy it.  I have access to probably 2000 acres of private land belonging to myself and neighbors.  The Millers farms, the folks I'm talking about, are kinda virginal, cause no one I know of has the right to shoot there.  I'm supposed to go shoot crows there tomorrow getting into silage.  The last time I did that, I wasn't set up for it and had my Maxi instead of a shotgun.  I lined up two and shot, and three went kapoof.  I think either bullet fragments or flying bone etc, got the third off to the side.

No Mennonites.
My Amish neighbors have lots of guns......and know how to use them.  They also have a nice population of tree rats that I can hunt whenever the mood hits me.

Kinda figgured there'd be a reason.
We've Amish near here, Have to admire their devotion. Quiet folks, and private, this group uses ML for their hunting. You can usually strike up a conversation if it's hunting or fishing or wood work.

I think there's about 4 or 5 Amish familys here now, all within the last year or so.  They bought up some very nice farms.  I help them with errands, transportation etc., in return, I get to hunt their land. Young Chris, (about 25) mostly wants to go to gun shows.........what a boring chore to have to take him ;D :o ;D  I had to go to town a while back and asked him if he wanted to go.  We stopped by Dukes Sport Shop in Newberry, MI and then did groceries, etc.  I dropped him off at home and went home to unload my goodies, and I found a small bag with quite a few nice, locally good. fishing lures.  Written on the bag was "Thanks Pete"  They're good friends and neighbors.  If I need an extra hand with something, they're here in a heartbeat, and I try to reciprocate.  Old Eli, my age I'd guess, was plowing his field this morning behind a horse and single bottom plow with his wife leading the horse..  I don't really understand why they do it that way.  Just about any of their neighbors would just say "Throw some gas in my tractor and it's done."  Some wouldn't even ask for gas....just friendship in return.  That's the way life is here...neighbor helping neighbor.  Thank God I'm out of the )*^$@$%^&*(&^%$% city where you don't even know your next door neighbor.

We've got lots of Amish and Mennonites here in KY.  I dont understand all of the differences, some have cars (usually a 15 passenger van or a work truck) some dont. Some you will see at Wal-Mart, others not.  I too admire their ability stick to their beliefs, lets face it the rest of the world (including me) looks at them a bit strangely.  But they are good people, hard workers, divorce rarely, and raise their family as a family.  Something the modern world fails to do all to often.

Hopefully, you haven't just made another handi'holic, but a new gun owner.

Im thinkin' the downturn in the economy hasnt hurt those folks much, either. Gives me 'pause for thought' that this big lie I long ago bought into (literaly) isnt what it was cracked up to be. I grew up on a sand county farm in s-central WI, did FFA and all. Most everyone believed what the Dept. of Ag said to do to set up for the future, and about all of them are in debt up to their ears or well into the next generation, or working a job to support a failing family farm.
Cant help but think, this aint the way its supposed to be in the USA.

I hear ya.  When my mom died, I sold the farm, couldn't see how a guy could make a livin buying all equipment, fuel costs and seed costs.  My dad used to say if he won a million dollars, he would just keep farming till it was all gone. :(  There are a lot of Amish where I grew up, Iowa, and out here in Montana there are Hutterites that use guns, vans, trucks, tractors, and electric.  Still have their strong beliefs and very hard working people.  DP

Good going Pete. Like dpe said, farming is rough. We farmed up to the point we had to borrow money to make a crop and that was it. No need in going into debt to farm. I still cant figure it all out. Until last year, crops brought the same they did in the 70's, but the cost went through the roof. A 10K tractor now is  right at 100K, not to mention fuel and chemicals. Glad we got out when we did...Did not sell the farms though, thank goodness, since they don't make more land..... Hope all have a good holiday, and a safe one.

Aumish or not it's great to have good neighbors! Mine are awesome, and don't mind me having a crazy night blowing up stuff when the need hits me and my family! 8) It's good to keep the peace and I can't express that enough.
Not to mention a long summer of poping groundhogs around here. I have neighbors a mile away that hear my rounds cracking out and ask why I am being so silent at times ;D

Pete,

I saw a post where they mentioned that H&R made tranquilizer guns.  Your friend with the wolf problem should get one and dart these bad dogs.  Then they could be placed into a rehab facility, treated, and then returned to the wild as safe and productive citizens. ::)
