44 Magnum Barrels
« on: June 11, 2010, 12:20:36 PM »
I was doing some searching on the Handi in 44 Mag and saw references to them having barrel problems in the past such as a over sized bore.  Is this still the case?  Also I would want to shoot 300gr Hornadys XTPs, would the rate of twist in the handi be sufficient?

i think prior to 07 they had a over-bore problem. we have one of both...before and much later
and they shoot so good that you really can't tell the difference when using the right bullet
in the right gun.  my sons is .433 and he shoots cast, mine is .430 and uses the xtp.
both are more accurate than we are @ 50yrds with handloads ;D

Mine is an older overbored .433.  It shoots Hornady LEs just fine.  I've got gas checked .433s for it, but I haven't loaded any yet, so I can't tell you too much.  They'll be a week or two down the pike.

Just dropping my 2cents for whats it's worth. I have owned both the old and a new and they both shot well with Hornady XTP's, they were a great bullet in both mine. I will have another when the time is right, it's an awesome cal in a Handi to have, excellent woods rifle.

I ordered a Handi in .44 and picked it up yesterday.  The barrel is marked SB2 but the frame has a sandblasted texture and is marked 357, 44, and shot gun only, I assume this is a SB1 frame.  I slugged the barrel and it is .432 grove and .425 lands.  Seems like they have been producing over-sized barrels in the .44 for years, they must be doing this intentionally.  Maybe some bean counter who has never pulled a trigger decided on the SB1 frame and to compensate for pressure by open up the bore a few thou, corporate logic....lol

I went into a gun shop yesterday after I picked up my 44 and I noticed that they had a handi in .44 with a SB2 frame and I believe a 20"bbl.  Its $199 so I am thinking of picking it up just to check it out.

Hey Green.  I'd snag it.  Just the Barrel and frame are worth more than that.

I picked up that 44mag with the SB2 frame HX prefix, she slugs out at .430 on the groves and .424 on the lands.  While I was there I saw a used Ultra in .223 for $199, it was in better condition then the new .44 so I decided to get it as well, although I don't need it.

Pete, I just go to the shops around metro Detroit, if it doesn't have the capability to hold 30+ rounds and empty the magazine in 5 seconds people aren't interested. lol
