jim, my savage 17ab shoots a 25gr hornady 1710 @ 3111 fps with 10gr imr-4227
and cci 450 primers, its pressure was recorded @31,822psi
i have heard that the sb1 can handle up to 40,000 cup....
the comparison of psi to cup is a touchy subject in a calculation.

please keep in mind.....no 2 guns, like there operators are created equal  ;D

I had the same problem with my 218 BEE on a SB1.....put it on SB2 and problem went away.  The firing pins are larger on SB1's.

Just go with the CCI 450's or the BR 4's or even the remington 7 1/2 and it will probably work out.  A hotter primer can ever lower the pressure depending on how the powder burns.  I am using the BR4's and Remington 7 1/2's in my 22 Hornet with no problems.  Larry

The firing pins on the sb1s purchased with the 357 or 44mag barrel have small firing pins.

The fireing pin sizes don't always follow any rules, I have a SB1 Marlin frame with a small pin, I have seen other SB1 shotgun frames with the small pin, I think they just use what the got.  Larry

My opinion is that is's the gap around the pin that causes most problems.  If there is too much gap, a happening called "blanking" occurs where the primer is sort of cookie cuttered out around the firing pin.  Making up a pin with very little gap around it seems to solve the problem, in bolt guns this is done by bushing the bolt head to make the firing pin hole just fit the pin.  The firing pin on an H&R goes in at an angle, so bushing it would be a difficult task.  I think making a slightly larger pin to close the gap around it would probably be the best solution.  I know of atleast three different pin sizes that have been used by H&R, there probably more.  Larry

I have noticed the same. Had an SB-1 shotgun frame that fitted up a 44Mag barrel in the past that did the same.
