Any duracoat users here

With nearly all the pieces in place for my two project handis (.357 max and .500 s&w) i am getting ready to apply duracoat to the frames and barrels.  This will be my first refinishing job of any sort.  Anyone here used this on their handis before?  Looking for any tips or tricks or dos and donts that may not be on the instructional dvd.

There have been several different coatings discussed. There is refinishing discussed in the FAQ's ans HELP section. eddiegjr

works great, do not handle bull barrels for 48 hrs after painting the weight will cause it to  take finger prints,  do it were you have excellent lighting. adding more hardener will increase shine of finish, use a good lacquer thinner instead of the reducer and you wont know the difference but your wallet will. I hang my barrels on a coathanger thru the bore and bent to support it on a big swivel to allow me to spin it while painting.

I have two rifles and a shotgun that were professionally duracoated. I did not perform the work myself, but I do know that the ones that were parkerized first will have a more lasting and durable finish.  ;)

I tried the Duracoat, did not like it.  We did seven guns for me and five for my partner.  We took all the steps suggested with the directions.  We had access to the big metal baking ovens and really went to great lengths to make sure we did it right.  Six months later we were very unhappy with the results.  Chips and scratches easily.  

As someone else said Parkerizing works a whole lot better.

I Camo a lot of my guns for preditor calling.  My favorite Camo is called Rustolium, the textured varity.  If I decide I don't like it Glass Beads takes it right off.

Duracoat ain't all it's cracked up to be. I had one of my shotgun barrels done by a gunsmith and within one season it was peeling and chipping off. Parkerizing is the way to go. Larry parkerized my 32-20 barrel when he did it and it still looks perfect. Very tough finish and looks great.

More of mine have duracoat on them, than do not.

You have to know how to make it stick.

It takes 3-4 weeks to cure, after that, you will never get it off.

You have to sand blast every piece.
You have to clean the metal with special cleaner.
You have to bake it for 20-30 minutes
You have to hang it in a closet, and forget about it for 3-4 weeks.

Did this one two years ago. Not even the sliding parts have worn off.

I couldn't agree with you more.  One coater has stated on his webpage that "duracoat is the only coating where you are charged more to remove it than to apply it." That says something about it....

3-4 weeks for Duracoat or 15 minutes in a parkerizing tank... I think I'll stick with parkerizing.
FWIW... my shotgun went almost 2 months before I used it and the duracoat didn't last 1 season. :-\
Maybe some guys have better luck with it than others.

  I'm not too sure the two can be compared, Duracoat comes in many colors. Duracoat works best when it's applied over a clean parkerized finish.  Give it a try someday if you grow tired of the color you have.  Hopefully you have better luck with it then.  :)

The proper preparation of metal for Duracoat is 80 grit media blast, completely clean, parkerized then Duracoat and cured. Done right it won't come off done wrong it won't stick a week.
How do i know my Son-in-law is a certified Duracoat applicator. Trained at Lauer's in Wi.

Well just watched the dvd that came with my kit.  Looks easy enough.  Seems, as with all coatings, that cleaning and prep work are paromount to a good end result.  Video says dry to the touch in 20 minutes, handle in 1 hour, and put into service in 24 hours.  Says needs full 4-6 week cure for extreme stuff like saltwater immersion.

If (when?) it fails........Rustoleum, your choice of colors. Cheap, do use the primer though on a thoroughly cleaned surface as in any of this work.
Does it look like bluing? No. Neither does Durocoat.

I beg to differ, but in your defense, this is not common knowledge. I had a shotgun duracoated with a specially blended and patented duracoat color that very closely resembles bluing. One of these days, I will get around to posting some pics. IMO, with the wood refinished, it looks better than it did when it was new, 50 years ago.  But who am I to compare, I'm only 34y/o.  ;D Also, in my case, my shotgun has an aluminum receiver and I had limited options for refinishing. Bluing doesn't work, it was originally anodized.

Here are the before and after pics that convinced me to get mine refinished. (not my pics) The pics are good, but not perfect. Mine looks more blueish that black.

I am a bit confused, I just read for Duracoat to work properly the metal has to be parkerized fiirst. If the metal has been parkerized why would you want to put something else on it? Seems a waste of a great finish (parkerized) already on the gun. What am I missing here?....<><....:)

Do I understand correctly that Durocoat has a 'smoothing' effect that may make up a bit for a less than perfect surface and several choices of 'gloss'?

It may not be the actual duracoat that makes up for the surface imperfections as it is the preparation. They do make Durafill that I  had used to fill sight slots on my 45LC handi. Now she's a smooth barrel.  The gloss all depends on how the clearcoat finish is thinned and the number of times it is applied.  Here's a pic of a shiny coating.

I would openly list my source of the pics and this info, but since one of the GBO sponsors offers coating services, I will respectfully omit it from the open forum. PM me.  ;)
