Genderless people give me the willy's!

Brett, From about 24-25 years ago to about 18 years ago starting prior to the construction of Rt 25 which extended Rt 495 to the Bridge all traffic had to exit at Wareham and use Rt 28 through Wareham and Bourne to get to the Cape. Traffic would back up for many miles and using the two-tone blue Harleys (French & Electric Blue, the colors of the Mass State Police, oldest State Police organization in the northern hemisphere, established in 1869 as the Massachusetts Constabulary later re-named the Massachusetts State Police, established 10 years before the RCMP) we would cruise the area and get through traffic that would stop cruisers in their tracks. I later rode some as a Cpl. and Sgt and even a bit as a Lieutenant, but the most fun I had was cruising as a young Trooper in Boots and Breeches on a nice shiny Harley and getting paid for it!!! If you recall from your old days in Mass. the Mass State Police, as well as the oldest, is a true state police agency, not a highway patrol. We enforce all laws in the state, Statute Laws, Common Laws, Fish & Game Laws, Food & Drug Laws, town by laws and city ordinances, as well as all liquor laws in all cities and towns in the state.  We have full and complete lawful authority everywhere in the state and 3 miles out to sea. In most states a lot of police work is left to sheriffs departments, however in Mass deputy sheriffs have no criminal authority, cannot make a criminal arrest other than a citizens arrest and have no authority to stop a vehicle or issue a traffic violation. They in fact are limited to power as guards(corrections officers) at county (not state) institutions. As a result of this the State Police are very busy. As a matter of fact Troopers have a statute authority to the use of any state or local lockup in the state and on occasion Troopers would just lodge a prisoner at a local PD or House of Correction if the Barracks was to far away.  You have made me very happy by recalling the good old days!!! Now I'll lift a glass for you my friend, and for all the troopers I have known, classmates and not, that are no longer with us. To tell you the truth I never thought I'd get to be here, retired and safe. Always had a nagging thought that some day I would be carried by Troopers, as the many Troopers I have carried and folded a flag over while on the Drill Team. But here I now sit, safe and sound. I'll offer up a little prayer for them now and ask those of you that are willing to do the same....<><

MSP Ret, I can recall what a treat it was as a kid to go to the old 5 & dime in the center of Buzzards Bay and fill one of those little paper bags full of penny candy or even better, get a bag of steaming hot, fresh roasted peanuts out of the peanut roaster that sat in their front window.  Mmmm, I can almost still smell them.  :-D    When we got a little older, If we weren't on the water boating, swimming or fishing you might have found us tearing up the track at the Bourne Cart track or catching a movie at the old Buzzards Bay Theater.  It was a great area to grow up in and I have lots of great memories..  The one thing I don't miss however are those horrendous summer time traffic jambs you mentioned.  Wow, how did we get on this trip down memory lane?  If I remember correctly, my dad had a good friend when I was a kid named Ray Bowen (I'm not quite sure of the spelling) who, I believe was a "Statey". Does that name ring a bell with you?

Hillbilly, Remember that it is not just the ability to sire children that makes you a MAN. It's that plus the ability to raise children who worship God, respect others and honor their parents that makes you a MAN.   At least in my book.

What part of West Virginia are you from? I graduated from WVIT in Montgomery and married a little hillbilly from Summersville 20 years ago this coming May.

Brett, Great memories all that you have. The name doesn't ring a bell but in "the good old days" we had manditory retirement on your 50th birthday, and I mean manditory. If you had a cruiser home with you on days off and you turned 50, someone came and picked it up!! Because of this there were not many 'Old timers" on the job. Of course then as well as now, the phrase "troopers ride alone" meant just that, no pardner, just you out in the cruiser or on the "Bike". So it was important to have young virile, agile men out on the road, it was a more physical job then, more fights, more brawls, more "roadside justice" administered, and less arrests because of it. It was a good thing also, people could screw up, get "educated" by the trooper, and hopefully lead a productive life without an arrest record, of course if you did not learn the first or second time, in you went to discuss it with the judge. Now of course we are a "kinder gentler State Police" and have old farts of 70+ years out there until a federal age discrimination suit is settled!!! What a waste!!! The only ones that stay are those who are afraid to retire or are worthless!!  They should retire and let the young guys have a chance.  Next time I see an older retired guy than me I'll ask about your fathers friend, "Ray Bowen"....<><....

To MSP and all those that served in some form of Police uniform.  I lift a glass in salute to you all.  I have taught all my children respect for the law and law officers.  I have let them and others (that claim they don't like cops) know that when we need someone, there is no one else (except soldiers) that willingly put themselves in harms way for a total stranger.

I do believe STRONGLY in my right to defend mysel cause you cannot be everywhere, but have always been glad you guys were on duty, even after you wrote the &%*&##@$&& speeding ticket.

One of my 19 year old son's goals is to end up in the FBI (Hostage rescue of all things) via local law enforcement first.  I hope (and don't) that he makes it.  Being a father you never want your kids in harms way but since they never served in the military like I did this is their way.  Our country needs fine young men like my son and I am proud he has chosen that path.

He is in his 3rd year of college as a sociology major then into law enforcement.  My hat's off to you all.

MSP I am an air traffic controller and one day a friend of my daughters, father and I were comparing notes about work.  HE was trying to tell ME how stressful my job was and I just laughed.  I cleared up the stress issue when I told him "Well at least if I piss off a pilot he can't shoot at me"  that ended the stress discussion.  I'll stick to my job thanks.

By the way, when one of your guys looses it and gets in trouble, I am sympathetic.  It's hard to deal with repeat offenders that are probably scum, cuss at you kick at you and would shoot you, given the chance and not "lose it" once in a while.

Don't make it right, just understandable.

I have to admit that having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 39 years I was a bit confused as to my gender.  But, now that I have moved to Texas I can confidently state that I am male - so noted in my profile.

I hope you are kidding!

In your profile, on the line that says "Gender"... go over to the right and there are three circles.   One for unknown (default), one for male and one for female.   just pick the one that applies and click on the circle.   That's all there is to it.

In the profile, there is a selection box for male, female & unknown - except for unknown, these are sexes, not genders (the third should be neither or possibly hermaphrodite).

Genders are: masculine, feminine and neuter.

There's no box for those.  ;D

A bit off topic, but as long as we're reminiscing about Mass. and Cape Cod, I'm wondering what ever became of the New York Central tug boat that sat at the Buzzards Bay rotary? I heard it was getting scrapped in favor of a new CVS store. When heading to the Cape for vacation, I always looked forward to seeing that tug and knowing that I was almost there.
