Brett, From about 24-25 years ago to about 18 years ago starting prior to the construction of Rt 25 which extended Rt 495 to the Bridge all traffic had to exit at Wareham and use Rt 28 through Wareham and Bourne to get to the Cape. Traffic would back up for many miles and using the two-tone blue Harleys (French & Electric Blue, the colors of the Mass State Police, oldest State Police organization in the northern hemisphere, established in 1869 as the Massachusetts Constabulary later re-named the Massachusetts State Police, established 10 years before the RCMP) we would cruise the area and get through traffic that would stop cruisers in their tracks. I later rode some as a Cpl. and Sgt and even a bit as a Lieutenant, but the most fun I had was cruising as a young Trooper in Boots and Breeches on a nice shiny Harley and getting paid for it!!! If you recall from your old days in Mass. the Mass State Police, as well as the oldest, is a true state police agency, not a highway patrol. We enforce all laws in the state, Statute Laws, Common Laws, Fish & Game Laws, Food & Drug Laws, town by laws and city ordinances, as well as all liquor laws in all cities and towns in the state. We have full and complete lawful authority everywhere in the state and 3 miles out to sea. In most states a lot of police work is left to sheriffs departments, however in Mass deputy sheriffs have no criminal authority, cannot make a criminal arrest other than a citizens arrest and have no authority to stop a vehicle or issue a traffic violation. They in fact are limited to power as guards(corrections officers) at county (not state) institutions. As a result of this the State Police are very busy. As a matter of fact Troopers have a statute authority to the use of any state or local lockup in the state and on occasion Troopers would just lodge a prisoner at a local PD or House of Correction if the Barracks was to far away. You have made me very happy by recalling the good old days!!! Now I'll lift a glass for you my friend, and for all the troopers I have known, classmates and not, that are no longer with us. To tell you the truth I never thought I'd get to be here, retired and safe. Always had a nagging thought that some day I would be carried by Troopers, as the many Troopers I have carried and folded a flag over while on the Drill Team. But here I now sit, safe and sound. I'll offer up a little prayer for them now and ask those of you that are willing to do the same....<><
