New Handi Owner
« on: May 20, 2010, 01:44:38 PM »
I've wanted one since I shot my BIL's in Virginia ground hog hunting.  His was a standard 223 and I ran across a 223 doing some horse trading last week.  I took it to the range and it didn't shoot anywhere as good as the my BIL has.  I did a little sanding on the barrel slot in the forend and also added a bipod to the the forend.  Took it to the range yesterday and it did much better, hold close to 1" groups @ 100yds with cheap 55gr PSP Rem. ammo.  I did notice something, if I did a firm closing of the barrel during loading it shot better groups.  Also if I did what I'll call a soft close during loading it would hold about a 2" group low and left.  Is this a known problem or should I check something?

I just finished giving it a good cleaning, I didn't have everything I needed to clean it good when I first got the rifle.  I also installed a rubber washer between the barrel and forend.  Let me know if I've done good or bad so far please.  I now have to wait for the winds to die down some before heading back to the range and testing the Black Hills 55gr Barnes TSX ammo that arrived today.

Thanks
Derek

Welcome Derek!  ;) Read the Handi Basics 101 sticky and the accurizing info in the FAQs, there are numerous tips to improve accuracy and consistency, closing the action firmly with some force is required to get good lock up of the action, you've experienced first hand what happens when you don't.  :-\

Thanks for the welcome Tim.  I will be checking out all the info available to help me out.  I really think the reason I got the rifle so cheap is it wasn't shooting very good.  I'm hoping to make it a tack driver and my go to coyote gun, time will tell.

I have several Handies and i use a 3/8 nylon washer on one while another uses a 1/4 X 20 set screw in the barrel screw slot. I recently read this maybe in the FAQ. Both seem to work well. Both of the Handies needed some filing of the forearm to get  clearance from the barrel, even with the washers/set set screw.

Be sure to keep the barrel latch and latch shelf dry and oil free when shooting.

Thanks guys!  Been doing a lot of reading in the FAQ and learning a lot. Just finished pulling the scope and mount and redoing the mount. One of the screws was a little on the loose side and there was no loctite.  I cleaned up the barrel and mount like it said in the FAQs and added loctite to the screws and also bedded the mount as well.  I'm itching to hit the range, but will have to wait as the wind is blowing way too hard to doing any good sighting today.  Also have a new stock set on the way for the rifle, so I might wait till it gets here before I got to the range.

Some thoughts on set screw vs the nylon washer.  I believe that the set screw in the forearm screw socket might be the better choice as it would eliminate any variability from screw torque differences. Just a thought as I have a washer on one Handi and a set screw on another

Never seen any examples of the set screw being installed.  The washer is easy.

My Handi takes a 1/4 by 20 set screw- get the shortest available.
Remove the forearm screw and forearm.
Insert the set screw into the forearm screw socket.
screw it to the bottom just "finger tight".
re- install the  forearm and screw the forearm screw
Check for forearm clearance, if still too tight, remove forearm screw, and back out set screw and repeat until the forearm has the desired clearance.
If there is not enough threads available for a good connection the forearm may still need some filing/sanding to gain extra clearance.
Back out the set screw noting the number of turns required to release. Apply Locktite and re-insert the set screw the required turns, let the Locktite set then return the forearm and tighten the forearm screw. I also apply a small amount of grease to the tip of the forearm screw to help reduce the friction between the set screw and forearm screw.
Anyhow that is the way I did it

Montveil, with your set screw application, i was wondering what is holding your fore end stock from being pushed back against the barrel if you set your for end stock on a shooting bag or use a bi-pod or something like that?? i realize that the screw would stop at where ever you had the set screw dialed into, but there is nothing stopping the stock moving towards the barrel, am i missing something here??

I wanted to free float the barrel from the forearm so I went to the FAQ and found the washer/set screw suggestions. Either solution is  permanent and can be reversed quickly. Try them and see if they work for you and the costs are less than a dollar.
I have one or the other on all my Handies and my 10-22 and all seem to work well but more shooting may favor one over the other.

This is the original forend set screw link from accurizing section of the FAQs, you'll find several other options there as well.
