I have the same extraction issue, I think it's too high on the right side of the receiver if I remember correctly. I haven't gotten around to filing it yet, it's not that big of a deal for me. I haven't had any case bulging issues even with hot Buffalo Bore rounds.

Just for grins and giggles-It seems to me that a sloppy/oversized chamber could be reworked by a competent machinist.  The chamber can be bored oversized and true to the bore, and an insert pressed in.  Then rechamber.  The fit can be enhanced by heating the barrel after it is bored, and having the insert sized to just push fit, after it comes out of dry ice.  We fix some precision equipment like this on a regular basis.  It may be too expensive, but if you just have to have one, it is a way to do it.

I would love to own a 45 Colt barrel that was chambered poorly like yours.  I would stub it into a 45 ACP.

My 45 Colt barrel doesn't swell brass; it's chambered fine.  Too bad they're discontinuing it.  Figures.

H&R is leaving money on the table by not offering 9mm, 40S&W and 45acp.

My 45 ACP barrel project has left the launch pad.  Will be slow as have to fit the schedule of a very competent smith, but hope to have it by late fall, early winter.  Many other toys to play with so I can wait, no problem.  Now if I can just find a Reamer for 460 Rowland then I can get a tad more powder behind the .452 slug.

Well, the final answer on mine from the dealer was that there wasn't a real answer.  All the barrels they had in stock were similar in chamber size.  What the dealer did do I thought was cool is they are sending my first one back which extracted correctly and will transfer that one to me.  It was much more accurate than my second one for groups, so I think it's the best outcome, considering H&R's failure to follow through on their warranty.  I finally found another 100 brass, so I have a hundred I'm going to use for the carbine and my current hundred will be for my Ruger for now.  I intend to neck only size the carbine brass, so I don't have to work harden it as much, but this way I can still shoot the pistol brass in the carbine if I'm out hunting/shooting and need to.  This will simply mean they need full length resizing before use in the Ruger again.  I was keeping my carbine reloads separate anyway, because I'm using RL7 in the carbine loads as it has performed stellar and gives much more consistent velocity/accuracy over Unique or H110 loads.   ;)

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply. I do have a .45 ACP Handi with a ported SS barrel and it is a great trail companion and a fine camp gun. I have always had a fond spot in my heart for that old warhorse and used to shot 1911's competitively and I know just how accurate they can be. I also like thier stopping ability with the lack of excessive penetration. By reloading, and with the versatility of a single shot, there is not much that the .45 ACP cannot be used for. There is even a .45 Super that is an outstanding big bore cartridge.

"Q: The December issue's Gun of the Month is chambered for a round called the .45 Super. What exactly is the difference between the .45 Super and the .45 ACP?

Jim Golden

Dobson, NC

A: In a word, power. The .45 Super is a beefed up .45 ACP case and drives a 230-grain bullet at 1,100 fps and 185 grainers as fast as 1,300 fps. Developed by Dean Grennel, the .45 Super was made by shortening .451 Detonics cases (which had a beefier case based itself on the .45 Win Mag) to .45 ACP length, reducing the firing pin hole to keep primer flow under control and adding heavier recoil springs. Fitting a barrel fully supporting the chamber is a big plus. Although .45 Super will chamber in a .45 ACP barrel, shooting such will batter an unconverted 1911 to pieces in short order.

Today, Buffalo Bore (P.O. Box 78, 100 Freeman Creek Rd., Carmen, ID 83462, 208/75

6-8085, www.buffalobore.com) is one of the only companies currently making .45 Super ammunition. Starline (1300 West Henry, Sedalia, MO 65301, 660/827-6640, www.starlinebrass.com) makes reasonably priced high-quality .45 Super brass."

Wreck,

I can tell you that a 45 super in a handgun is a lot louder than a 38 spc.  Of course this is apples to oranges, my 45 Super is a 1911 and my 38 spc is 4" revolver.  Considering the relatively small case volume of a 45 Super (pretty much the same as a 45 ACP) I would think in a 16" or longer barrel the report would be fairly tame compared to a lot of the H&R calibers.

I have a 16" barreled 45acp converted Enfield rifle.  Not the same animal as a Handi, but it's a long barrel and a closed breach, so there is some basis for comparison.  I can shoot it outside without hearing protection and not get that ear ringing that I would get firing a 1911 repeatedly or from  a 223 or the like.  Pistol ammo is typicly loaded with fast enough burning powder than most or all of it is done burning by the time you push out a foot and a half of barrel, and that makes a huge difference in 'percieved report'.
