Have You Decided...?
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:11:47 PM »
Have you decided which of your lever action rifles you
plan to use during this year's hunting season?

I will likely use my Winchester 94 30-30, 1955 vintage
or my Puma 92 in .480 Ruger caliber.

Thanks,
Rifle Man

I'll use my Model 94 3030 1958 vintage, and my Navy Arms Deluxe Model 92 in 357 magnum depending on area and mood.

My Marlin 38-55 has been a safe queen for to long, she's gonna go out to dance this year. :-*  Gotta Rossi 454 Casull that needs to find a whitetail down by the river and I think my new 308 MX Marlin should find an antelope for me this year.  Depending on where I go for elk, one of the 444's or the 338 MXLR will go to that dance.  And I gotta 7-30 Waters that may get a chance at a mulie. ;)DP

One of my 35 Remingtons, both Marlins.  One has a scope, one does not.  Now that I'm one year into geezerhood (66) the scoped one is likely to get the nod.  With either one I'll use a 200 Gr RCBS flatnose home-cast bullet.

When I hunt Maine for whitetail this year, I am going to use my Browning BLR .358 Win. loaded with 225 grain NP bullets.  The Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet is fine for whitetail in a .358, but I like the NP bullet in case I run into a nice bear, as the seasons over-lap.  My fall turkey gun in PA is usually my old Winchester 9422 .22 Mag, unless I feel like using a handgun.

THERE IS THE 300 wm FOR MOOSE ETC FOR THE LONG SHOTS. The 3006  for moose and deer in mixed bush while the 388F for deer and bear , while the 307 seems handy for close in deer . If I hunt out of town I bring two rifles with Ammo. While at home some one either friend or family, and they grab th o6 most of the time.

My Marlin 336 30-30 made in 1969 will see some use.  I've had it a year and have yet to shoot a deer with it but did shoot a hog last spring.  I'll also use the 1894 SS 44 magnum which accounted for an 8-point last year.  It would also be great to get something with my 1894 C with the Skinner sights on it.  It's a 1980 model that I got last fall and have hunted with just a little so far.  Of the three it's by far the most fun to carry around, but maybe isn't quite up to what they are capable of doing.  That's more due to the fact that the others are scoped and are easier for my aged eyes to use.

:D My first choice will be my Marling 45-70...got it this spring, and haven't taken anything with it .Will probably use it on whitetails and antelope..will also use my Marlin .25-35..either on whitetails or antelpe...will also pack my 99's mostly the .300 Sav., but maybe the .358. Have taken game with all but the .45....the .250, .30-30's and 32 spl...will likely not see any action this year...

For general stalking in the Alberta bush I rely on the best rifle cartridge combo ever invented, the 444 Marlin.  I don't hunt big animals but buy a license to carry my Marlin without long talks with Wardens.

I will be hunting whitetails for meat with my Lyman .54 lefthand Flintlock.  I am a true hunter but my wife has very firm beliefs regarding sanctity of life.  The world needs old soldiers like me but it needs loving souls like her more.  I hunt to feed the poor and she doesn't want details.  You know up here we consider deer as government cattle and people who are hungry deserve thier share to if they can't hunt.

The 1895 is my only choice. But for an only choice I'm pretty happy. I plan to introduce Brer Bear to my taxidermist late august!

Easy for me, since I only have one....

I'll be hunting with my first gun -a 1976 vintage Marlin 336 in .30-30, which I've owned for the last 34 years.  I recently had a half-magazine conversion done to it, had the front swivel stud mounted to the retained fore-end/barrel band, and had a soft rubber buttpad installed.  It always shot great "for a lever" but now, with the shortened mag tube, it shoots practically bolt-action good, making little "four leaf clover" groups with its 3 in mag + 1 in chamber payload shooting Reminghton 170 grain loads.  I'll use it during Oklahoma's modern gun deer season, maybe get up to Nebraska for deer, and also use it hog hunting during the cooler months.
