Protective finish for "in the white"?
« on: May 07, 2010, 06:30:53 AM »
If I decide to go with the unfinished bare steel look of the 1861 Springfield for example, I may need to use something to protect the exposed steel.  Wiping down the gun with oil is not a problem, but the underside barrel area next to the stock has me concerned.  I used to have a Swedish Mauser long barreled rifle that had several areas in the white and I had luck putting on a coat of clear linseed oil.

What do you guys use on your bare finished muzzle loaders to prevent rust?  How easy is it to take an 1861 or 1855 Springfield apart?

Thanks.

I use Eezox on all my firearms including bare steel parts, have never had a rust problem, they're all stored in 55-60% humidity year round. Eezox dries to a protective film in a day or so after application and doesn't attract dust or gum up.  ;)

That's the catch, local dealers are scarce, Midway sells it tho, maybe you'll be lucky and have local dealer, my local mom and pop shop closed several years ago, they were the only local source I had.  :-\

I use STP silicone spray on all my guns. Leaves a film of silicone to protect the finish from corrosion.
