Drilling - Rimed or Non Rimmed Cartridge
« on: May 03, 2010, 06:21:19 AM »
I am looking for a drilling again.  I am open to the 12 or 16 ga, both have their pluses and minuses.  Causing me to be open to either.

For the rifle I would prefer a 30-06 but I am opened to a rimmed cartridge.  If I go with a  30-06 I dont need to buy any additional ammo.

In my combo guns I shoot mainly non rimmed cartridges with out any issue.

In the drilling is the rimmed superior?

my only experience with a break action firearm and a rimless cartridge was a nef 223. it was a disaster.
I would pick a rimmed classic caliber.

IF, i'm spending the $$ to get something like a drilling, i want everything to be as proper and smooth working as can be, and rimmed cartridges just work smoother in a break open gun.  I've owned both, and i kept the rimmed version, that doesn't mean rimles won't work for you though.

Same deal with 12 or 16ga.  12ga drilling are "clunky" and not my cup of tea!

My Valmets handle the non-rimed cartridges very well.  But they have extractors that make a big difference.

DM you have a good point about rimmed cartridges.

OK I'm going with a 16 ga and rimmed cartridge.  I was leaning to the 12x12/.30-06 but after thinking about it I really like the 16 ga.  Having a few extra boxes of ammo is not that big of a deal...

thanks

It'll be alot easier to find a nice 16/16 8X57R drilling than any other. The 8mm is no slouch! Easily comparable to an `06 and it has a rim! Ammo is still 20 bucks a box too!

I would look at a 7X57R caliber combined with a 12 ga. 2 3/4's. The best deals are on drillings with unusal rifle calibers or issues with the chamber dimensions of the shorgun. The 16 ga was built with a short chamber 2 9/16's as well as in standard length so you have to look at this issue. I recommend you don't go down the path of special calibers or non standard chambers. I have enough trouble keeping my 5.6x52R fed with .227 bullets to add finding non-modern spec 16 shells.
