.22 contender
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:24:52 AM »
I put a green dot on my G2  .22lr  and was shooting patterns not groups. I switched from WW 333 packs to an old box of Wally World  WW experts.   The groups went from about 4 inches at 25 yards to about 3/8 "  at 25 yards from an improvised rest.   My barrel is a stainless pre-G2  10".  I was about to give up until I switched ammo.

This gives credence to the old saying that each barrel is unique and each has ammo it loves and hates.

I used to shoot bullseye matches with a Ruger MKII 22LR pistol. The most accurate ammo in it was the cheep-O PMC Zapper. That stuff would out shoot any of the high dollar target ammo. It pays to experiment. I help teach the hand gun carry permit class and we use the Ruger MKII to teach new shooters how to shoot. We got some bulk box Winchester ammo and found that the bullet was breaking apart before it hit the target on some of the rounds. It was wild. You would shoot a shot and there would be two or three holes in the target. It was only now and then but it happened with 3 different guns.

I have a few boxes of Eley Standard, I used them to thin the herd of sparrows on the farm about 20 yrs. ago. At 25 yds. they will give you an oval hole w/ 5 shots if I do my part.
Now days I only shoot them when I need that accuracy or want to test my shooting ability.
1) Get yourself some Eley 10X, they don't cost much if you only use them when absolutely necessary.
2) Different lots of the same ammo will vary also, if you find a lot that shoots real well, go buy all the ammo of that lot you can afford.
3) I've had the most luck w/ 40 gr. bullets, HP or solids.
(Mid-80's Contender Super 14 w/ a Tasco ProClass 4X w/ a dot reticle)
Good Luck and shoot alot.

Shot 1, I also shot the mk2 in comp. some years ago. Federal Lightnings outshot ALL Ely ammo by far. Can't seem to be able to find them anymore.  Pat
