Just bought a Handi in 30-30 (now w/ range report 4-22)
« on: April 15, 2010, 12:34:50 PM »
Greetings Gents

For several years I have dreamed of getting Handi in 30-30. I'm not sure why since gun snob that I am I should be dreaming of a Parker shotgun or something. Anyway, today I went to a pawn shop and the guy handed me a straight stocked 30-30 Handi rifle. It seems like they are not making the 30-30 lately and I am a huge fan of that round.
So, what is the best way to scope this gun? Is one mount preferred over others? I like a scout scope set up and am wondering if anyone makes a scout mount for this gun.
I am thinking about putting a Williams WGRS on the back of this gun if I don't scope it. Any one have any experience with that set up?
The only thing I see about this gun and iron sights is when the hammer falls it blocks the sights so you can't see your let off and really follow through.

You lucky dog! If you decide it aint quite what you want it will go fast here.
If you like rear peeps that would do well, though you will need a taller front sight (someone will chime in on what works, and/or check the FAQs) and be a 'handi' configuration.
As for the hammer spur blocking the view, by then the shot is long gone. I shoot with both eyes open so I get a view anyway, but if you are a 'one eyed jack' you wont.

I get annoyed by the blocked view also. when in trees or brush I like to sight down my shooting lanes to pick out any branches or debris and  can only do this with a cocked hammer ::) so Ive taken to sighting over the hammer when using the handi. DR

Well, I called a buddy of mine who has gone Handi crazy. He is telling me the Warne base is the way to go so I am going to go with that. I am going to try to shoot the gun with the factory iron Sunday just to shoot it. There is something about this gun. It is so short and looks so nice. It is not really particularly light weight though. I guess once it is scoped the hammer will not block my vision when the shot breaks. Someone put a sling swivel mount on the barrel so I wonder if that will effect accuracy at all. It is like the ones you would typically put on a levergun's tube mag. I wish I had kept my 30-30 neck die I gave away now.

If I get a good group I will post a pic of it.

I do not know what all this talk about the hammer blocking the sights is about. I think it is a moot point. The muzzle coming up is going to block any thing you might see through the sight any way. We are not talking about a B-B gun. When you pull the trigger, do not jerk, you will hit what you were aiming at. Follow through is important, just imagine you are still looking at your target, like I said you will not be able to see it, even if the hammer was not in the way. If you want to see the target through the whole process, keep both eyes open and concentrate on the target/deer/whatever and do not flinch. Good Choice on the 30-30, you will love it. ;)

Well, I got beat out of my range trip. I did get a pic of the gun though. It looks like a Buffalo Classic. I would have bought one of those if they were a 44 instead of a 45. I am going to shoot this gun soon. My fired brass from my Marlin, which has a sloppy chamber, will not chamber in the Handi. Rounds reloaded from brass fired in the Marlin will though. I may dedicate some brass to this rifle. I think I will yank the Burris 4X off my muzzleloader when I get a base for this gun and try it on this rifle. I get a good feeling about this gun.

I made it to the range today. Beautiful sunny day it was too. I shot a few rounds at 25 yards and found the gun was hitting way high. About 5 inches high at 25 yards. I adjusted it and went to 50 yards. I played with the elevation a little more and got it zeroed for elevation but the gun is printing about 4 inches to the right. I did not have a hammer and punch to drift the rear sight so I will do that later. Group wise it is not bad for iron sights and a guy with glasses. If it were scoped I am sure it would group tighter. The load was 32.0 grains of Varget under a Sierra ProHunter 170 grainer. That has always been a good load out of my guns. I guess I will go head and order a base and scope this gun up and try that. I think this gun will be alright.

That's great, but keep trying, you'll eventually hit that quarter!!  ;D
