Another Topper found a home this week
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:37:16 AM »
Was at the local shop looking for a 243 to start my 6mmAI project to no luck. There was a topper sitting there for $175. It looked like it had seen better days as far as looks so I looked it over pretty good and asked how long it had been there. Next thing ya know I was out the door with a serial prefix NE model 158 Topper 30-30 with a box of remington green box 150 grain to make sure she worked for $125. Like I said shes not much to look at right know but give me a few days and I will post the after pics.

Heck, that is even better if it is an SB2 frame. The 30-30 can really be made to rock-n-roll with that kind of strength frame.

Ah yes the frame, I was pretty sure it was a SB2. Just got around to taking it apart, confirmed SB2 frame. Stocks have been stripped and first coat of stain put on, red mahogany. I decided to leave all the dings and minor imperfections in the wood for character. I would like to brown the barrel and have the frame case hardened. Just not sure I can/want to try it myself. If its to much work I may try parkerizing it unless that is more involved. Will post more picture as it comes along.
I am pretty excited its a SB2 frame. I have 110gr v-max, 165gr rem psp, 165gr btsp interbonds and 180gr rem psp. Just need to snag a set of dies for it now. Hoping to use the 165gr btsp interbonds with good results.

Frame 'case colors' (vs real case hardening) may be achieved, or so Ive read online, at home. I have not tried it. The base metal influences the colors a lot. Sending out to have it done isnt cheap, and there you go, sending a receiver to an FFL again and back. If you did not mind that, check on the Metalife finishes, their 'coin silver' looks nice to me.

Threw on a spare stock set today, the ones that came on it are still drying (stain). Wanted to see if she functioned, was going to shoot some targets but ended up being way to windy. I ended up shooting 20 rounds just to to see if it would act up and how the brass came out. Brass looks good, but man that ejector really throws the shells. Stocks are almost done, barrel reblued, just trying to decide if I want to mess with the frame or leave it. Picke up a shell holder and dies along with 50 rounds of brass. First load work will begin with 165 rem psp. Also picked up a scope rail for it in case I decide to throw a 1x or 2x on it that I have laying around.
