Found a Honey Hole
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:27:49 PM »
Patty and I snuck away this weekend to relax, do a little shopping, buy some stuff for her employer and to do some "Handi Lookin fer".

Patty was getting her hair cut and I wandered into Dunham Sports in Escanaba, MI to see if they had anything interesting in their gun racks.  No, but the interest was behind the counter.  A mature, graying, and very knowledgeable guy.  Not the kid that thinks he knows it all.  They didn't have anything I wanted, but business was slow, Good Friday, and he was amiable and wanted to talk.  We spent a mutually happy half hour looking at guns and talking about others.  They don't carry reloading components, so I asked where I might find some.  He said the closest and best place was in Powers.  I'd guess 25 - 30 miles west on U.S. 2.
Named "J's".  Not to be confused with Jay's in Lower Michigan.  "J" is Jeanette Nowack, owner, Lady In Charge.......and....she know's her stuff.  I won't try to guess a ladies age, but Jeanette is a senior.  She's a hands on Competition shooter and hunter.  She's also one of the nicest, down to earth persons I've ever met.  Anyhow, this fine lady happened to have at least 25 - 30 kinds of powder, plus bullets, dies, etc., but also had primers.....all of them....said her large pistol came in Yesterday.  We scoffed up on a lot of bullets and powder and Patty even got a benefit cook book Jeanette helped put together.  Oh yeah, she's an H&R dealer, and has some nice goodies in stock.  Thank God, nothing I needed.  My "Gun Allowance" is toast for this month and probably the next two.

Anyhow, any of you Handiholics traveling that way stop in and say "Hi" to Jeanette.  This is an "Old Timey" neat place to be.

Your tour guide,

Pete

I've got to go to Marshfield, WI in May or June for a cancer check, and It'll put me in front of her door, and I'll be glad to see her again and stock up.

My son-in-law is originally from Powers. I'll have to ask him about the place. The little woman and I take in a show now and then at the Island Resort Casino, so I'll have to stop there when we get that way again.

We stayed Friday night at the Island, had an absolutely superb dinner and breakfast, nice room, good shopping and Patty won enough to more than cover what I lost plus our expenses at the Island, so, thanks to her, we had our second free weekend there.  She wants to go back Mother's Day, so we'll get to see Jeanette again and pick up some more candy.

Sounds like a nice trip.

When you come back, remember she's only open Mon, Wed, Fri, & Sat.

It's only about 15 miles from me so I go there quite often.  I can attest she's a fair and honest person to deal with and prices are very reasonable.

On Saturdays there's usually a group sitting at the table drinking coffee and telling tall tales and anyone who walks in is welcome to pour a cup and pull up a chair.  Of course gunshop rules apply - first liar doesn't stand a chance!!!

We're north of Engadine, about 135 miles from Powers, an hour west of the Mackinac Bridge.  If she was closer, I'd be there for coffee for sure.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Da U.P., both Powers and Engadine are small villages......Nice friendly little places.

DP, she didn't make us rich, but it did cover our trip expenses outside of what we spent shopping.....and, we had fun.  Our quality time together is getting shorter with each passing day, so we're getting into a "do it now while we can" frame of mind.  All of us old farts are in the same boat.
