.25-35 Winchester
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:19:01 AM »
Being a fan of the 'quarter bore', I am wondering if a 25-35 Win barrel for a carbine/rifle might be in the Contender 'to buy' realm.
The one stock for a carbine that I still like is the thumbhole walnut that Fox Ridge offered [used to?] and the G1 is all it fits. I've owned a few early Contender frames and an 'easy open' frame on one of these Fox Ridge stocks is tempting me, if I can find one.
Anyone using the .25-35 in anything Contender?
I'm also one that enjoys opening up a chamber to Ackley Improved and the .25-35 sure looks like it could use a bit more powder room and less case taper!
For years I have been hunting [when not using my bows] with a Ruger 77 Mark II in .250 Savage Ackley Improved. A 24" barrel in a T/C Contender [G1 or G2] is tempting......what think?

I hunt with a 25-35 in an encore and I have a 25-35 carbine barrel for my youngest son. I shoot 100 grain rem bullets and use 3031 powder with standard primers. I had a great year with mine and he will next year....

;) I have a rebarreled Marlin lever gun in 25-35...I don't use it all the time, but so far have shot prairie dogs, rockchucks, woodchucks, coyotes, antelope, whitetails, and mulies...I enjoy fooling with it..I have single loaded spit. style bullets in it, but for most of my shooting the old 117 horn. does service on big game...Francis Sell wrote and article on the .25-35 Improved years ago..when he was a kid, he shot like 125 deer with a pair of carbines in that caliber...then he had a rebarreled model 64, and finally late in life decided to revisit his youth..and rebarreled a Marlin with a 24 in. barrel on a half mag...but this time went with the Improved...it did cut down case stretching and give a bit more speed...I think the ariticle was in Handloader or Rifle, back when they were excellent magazines...I had my article in Wolfe's big book on Wildcats...you might check there......I shoot my some, but am mostly a bolt action guy...

I was tempted by the same caliber, but then I picked up a 6 TCU carbine bbl here off the forum. Now I think I want something a little bigger, like 6.5x30-30 AI. Then up from there either a 375 Win or a 375 JDJ. More than likely a JDJ...

 ;D

If I hadn't picked up the TCU bbl, I'd have likely went 25-35, and then had it AI'd.

Go for it.

I had looked in that very book just before posting this topic! Now I'm going to read it again as I had only skimmed it. I have both the Ken Water's 'big book' and the Vol I and Vol II 'big book', the one where both volumes are together. I have just 'discovered' the 25/35 and am wondering why I have not researched it before. Looks to be a nice 'slim' 30/30 style rimmed case, just "perfect" for a  Contender.
