Stovepipe?
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:31:31 AM »
I asked this in the ruger forum and nothing so I figured It might do better here.

I have a mk3 that stovepipes constantly, I tried cleaning it, oiling it and no difference.

Any suggestions? It extracts the fired case from the chamber but it's not ejecting it for some reason.

I'm assuming you're talking about a MkIII 22 rimfire autoloader.. In any case the usual cause of a failure to eject is a failure of the extractor.. Sounds weird I know but the extractor must retain the case until it can be impacted by the ejector. The sudden energy transfer is what expells the empty.. The Ruger uses a self retained extractor with a plunger. As a general reule these need a bit stronger spring than some other designs. Removal is a little dicey but a small screwdriver to push down the plunger will allow the extractor to be removed. Clean the hole it lives in and be certain there's no damage to the spring. Also I've seen them assembled without the plunger.. Don't know how they worked at all but extracor tension or its lack is likely the problem... Good luck. Over all the Ruger is a very effective design./.
