Paper Patched 303 british?
« on: March 12, 2011, 05:18:23 AM »
I am a novice when it comes to paper patching, never done it but read this forum eagerly.    I was wondering the feasibility of paper patching .308 bullets and loading them into my .303 British cases.    My old SMLE has a groove diameter of .3135.   Is this a doable venture and could I expect any kind of decent accuracy?    Thanks for any and all insight.

Just out of curiousity - why wouldn't you want to try paper patching .311 slugs or casting/sizing to .314???

Mikey,
I haven't done any paper patching as yet.    The .311 bullets give lousy accuracy as they are undersized,    I have cast some .314 bullets and they work good at modest plinking velocities.

The reason I was thinking about .308 and patching up is that there are a myriad of .308 bullets to choose from.   The .311 selection is a lot smaller.

I wanted to see if anyone had some experience or knowledge with this application before I start fumbling in the dark.

I'm not going to be much help.  A few years ago I tried to Patch a 0.308 bullet for my SMLE.  Tried paper from 16 lb down to cigarette paper, no luck.  All I could get were keyholes.  Had to give up trying as I was away a few years.  Let me know how you do.  It has to work, just a matter fo finding the right combination.
