Anyone shooting this beast in an Encore. What is the recoil like? What other calibers does it compare with?

IEH,  I do not own an Encore, but did have an stw, when they first hit the market...one of the guys over the mt. loved it for elk, he used 175 grain Horn. in his...I used mine for about a year probably, but decided the amt. of powder burned was not worth the speed gained...went to a 7mm Wea. in a 700 action..witht the long mag. box, I can seat a 160 out to the base of the neck on the case...it will kick these along about 3250 fps.  With an Encore you could do the same...

Knew a fellow once who did. His dad had one just like it or about like it in .338 Magnum. From the way they talked recoil was at least equal to or greater than the .338. Both put towels between the gun and shoulder with at least 8 folds thickness.

Both of their shoulders looked like raw hamburger after about 20-30 shots. Both were flinching by the end of our informal match.

A relative of mine has an STW and he does the same thing, only he puts a small sand bag on his shoulder. Sounds like a lot of fun huh?

;D >:( I am not sure why these guys had so much trouble with recoil..the STW did kick, but not horrible...I probably shot my about 800 rds. or so before I sold it...or rather rebarreled...certainly, the .338 's I had with heavy loads were more uncomfortble to shoot, but no rifle has ever bloodied my shoulder or for that matter even bruised it...Maybe these fellows were not holding the rifle snug against the shoulder...One thing I do know...if a guy has a bench that he can shoot from a standing position, the recoil is distributed much better...I think the body rolls with the recoil instead of absorbing it while leaning over a bench...Elmer mentioned this several times concerning big doubles, and shooting a pals light wt. .300 wea. made a real believer out of me....

:-X I have a 28" pro hunter fluted barrel with muzzlebrake from MGM i love it. I put about 2 boxes thru it with 162 grain hornadys at 3250 seems to be a mild load. I don't notice the recoil it seems the same as a 260 rem with 140s. I also have a 6mmai, 224 tth, and 260 rem prohunter fluted barrels from MGM. Three frames with trigger jobs from eabco with oversize pins. They will all shoot 3/4" minus if I do my part. Can I say these MGM barrels are real shooters. ;) ;) ;D

Did they happen to have a muzzle brake on their rifles? Everytime I consider getting a heavy recoiling caliber like a .375 I stop and wonder how
bad could it be with a good brake on the gun? If these fellows were getting torn up even with a brake, I think I will pass on getting a heavy duty
recoiling barrel.
