45/70 Pointed Bullets...
« on: February 27, 2010, 11:43:36 AM »
Hey All,

I am going to toy with a 45/70 single shot.

I found an interesting load -

45/70 Government (Ruger #1) 300 Gr. Barnes O Semi-Spitzer

Through Conley Precision and it looks like this -

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x264/M_444/Bullets/300GrBarnesOSemiSpitzer.jpg

Can't shoot these in a lever gun, but a single break open; I am picking up a H&R ...

Let me know is you have used any of these...

Here tell I can get 300 yards out of the pointed ones :)...

I've shot a few of the 400gr Originals, and did a load work up with the 300gr TSX-FB using Barnes Ruger data, the 300gr don't have a great BC, so they aren't very flat shooting even at Ruger velocities.

+1 on that.  I shoot the LEs on target at 300 yards.  Last year, I took my buck with a LE 325 gr. at 220 yards.  I love em.

The LE is the only over the counter ammo with pointy bullets, Conley makes 2 loads with them, other than that you'll have to handload to get pointed bullets for the 45-70. You may have to throat the chamber to shoot the Ruger loads, they typically are loaded longer.

I use 405's at trapdoor level for my hunting out to 125yds or so. If I need to shoot farther I grab the 270. I always find a shot under a hundred in the woods. trapdoor loads kill very dead very fast. Never felt the need for more. I can shoot all day off a bench with them too.

Garrett offers no pointy bullets, but there are no problems as far as their load level, anything safe in a Marlin is safe in an H&R, but those loads that they don't include the NEF (H&R) may be loaded too long to be able to chamber in some H&R 45-70s due to their short throats, nothing a throating reamer won't fix tho.  ;)

Saeco 21A GC from Western Bullet (in the FAQ's). Not really "pointy" but has a good profile, SD, and the cost is low. Work for me out to 200 easy, far greater with practice.

if you cast lead yourself lyman offers mold 457677  its a tapered semi pointed.  designed by paul matthews for bpcr shooting, but so far has been doing well with smokeless. being that it is a tapered design you can seat it way out there before it engages the rifling.it leaves enough case capacity to get 70 gr of goex cartridge grade in with a ox yoke wonder wad, about 1/16th in. compression loaded into the rifling
