Forward Sling Swivel
« on: January 21, 2010, 07:12:38 AM »
I have a 1975 Model 1894 in .44 Mag.
I have read The Art of the Rifle by Jeff Cooper and have decided this would make a fun short range scout rifle.  I will use peep sights and keep ranges at 150 yards or less.
I will need a sling and my rifle does not have swivels attached.
For the front swivel, should I replace the forend nose cap with one with a swivel attachment (Brownells sells it) or should i use a swivel stud that clamps on to the magazine tube?
Please respond if you have experience or opinions on either one.

Thanks,
Doug

If it was me I would use the nose cap swivel but it's a personal preference thing both would work fine. It sounds like a good plan for that 1894, lets see a picture when your done.

FWIW, I have made a Ching Sling setup for a few Marlin 336's for friends with a 1" carrying strap attached at the front of the mag tube with a QD swivel/clamp, and at the sling's rear with a  wood forend-type swivel QD stud with maching threadfs/nut ILO wood screw threads.
I trashed the machine nut, shortened the threaded part of the QD stud, and installed it in the bottom/front of the 336 receiver's bottom metal, replacing the screw there.

With a 3rd QD stud in the buttstock's normal position, the rear of the sling can then either be hooked up under the receiver in the Ching position or as normally at the rear.

The Safari Ching Sling does not require the middle sling swivel.

Looks interesting to me...

I just put an Uncle Mike's #1331-2 QD Swivel kit on my Glenfield 30 GT .30-30 (same as Marlin 336). You just remove the barrel clamp and slide the clamp over the magazine tube.  Be sure the clamp does not touch the barrel since it will affect the barrel vibration.  Slide a piece of paper between the top of the clamp and the barrel, if you can't get it thru just loosen the screw and turn it a little.  Recheck and repeat until you can get it thru.  Check to see what is the correct model for your rifle.

I finally got my 1894 together.

Close-up of the Williams 5D Peep sight.

Paired with my Winchester Model 67 .22 Scout

I originally thought of the 1894 as Short Range Scout Rifle (SRSR) because of its caliber and lack of telescopic sight, but I have decided to call it "Iron Scout" to celebrate its rugged simplicity.

Share my joy and be inspired. :)

It looks good, but why the slip-on recoil pad?  What scope and base did you use on the .22, I really like it?

The recoil pad is because I tend to be recoil sensitive. I guess it sounds a little wimpy; I just enjoy shooting it more with the pad.

The scope is an old Thompson Center my dad had and the same for the mount. I don't know where he got the mount and, since he passed in '86, I can't ask him.
I thought the mount was a B Square, but I can't find it in their catalog. It mounts to the rear sight dovetail with a screw into a threaded nut that is like an inverted T.
There are more pictures of it in Rimfire Rifles.
You are the 2nd. to ask about that mount; I also posted these pictures on another forum. If anybody nails it down, I'll spread the word to everyone.
