front sight disappears
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:20:26 AM »
Why is it when I put my 1894 up to my shoulder and look to put the front bead on top of the diamond. It disappears? You would think a shiny brass bead would almost glow.Maybe I'm getting old,but that can't be.I'm only 49 in April.
OK .Gents What has worked for you?I have been thinking of a ghostring with a white bead or maybe a vertical white line front sight.

Go to a local craft shop and buy a 1.89 bottle of florescent paint of your choice and put a dab on the front sight. it's Cheep and will last forever.

For a quick-try-fix, get a bottle of white-out, and paint that front sight white.  It will stand out much much better, and can be seen even in dense woods.  It is much better than a gold bead, except in instances when you might be hunting in alot of snow.

The fire-sights are also great, but are generally made of plastic, with plastic insert rods, and are not very durable.  You have to carry extra rods in case you break one.  But they REALLY stand out.

your eyes will focus on the front sight much better if you use a rear peep sight...and the closer to your eye the peep is the better you will focus on the front sight. This is something that you don't have to try to do, it happens naturally as a result of natural eye function

Thanks so much for all the responses.I will try the cheap paint first and go from there.
Does anyone make a peep or ghostring that does not need drilling and tapping that can be recommended?

I think the Williams FP336 would work for you. Just unscrew the sight insert to get a ghost ring.
My 1894 was drilled on the side for a peep and it works well with my 60 year old eyes.
I think the fire sight set from Midway can be bought with a peep that mounts in the scope mount holes, but it requires a taller front sight which is included.

That's why I scope my Marlins.  It fixes everything.

At the risk of thread-jacking, what about a Red Dot?

Had the same problem when I hit 40. The fix was a trip to the eye doctor and a pair of tri-focal eyeglasses.

Tri-focals!!I just was to the Doc and bought new bi-focals.Dangnamit.

I am hoping to not have to resort to a scope or red dot.If all else fails.Who knows what will end up on this rifle.

Too bulky & delicate.
