Notching a scope rail ?
« on: February 21, 2010, 03:27:19 PM »
I just bought a weaver #82 and it only has the 2 notches in it plus the flattened part in the rear. My plans for it is to put it on a 45-70 and mount a 2.5X20 shot gun scope ahead of the hammer. what are your recommendations for putting more notches in the scope rail.

I've seen it done on a table saw with a fine toothed carbide blade.

I put mine in a vice and notched it with a file, for a red dot scope.
Filed a V with the edge to get started, then worked it flat.
Went slow and stayed square.
practice on some kind if scrap.

I may have one that was already neatly notched. Interested? I'll send it to ya, just shoot me a PM with your address.

I try to help whenever I can. Just this evening, I helped an old man that had his new truck buried to the wheel wells in soft mud. It wasn't entirely his fault, the landowner of this lot poured gravel on a flooded field of grass and never compacted it. I was late for dinner, good thing my truck and I were dirty to collaborate my story. The wifey wasn't too happy, but when she learned that I was helping someone else, it was alright.  :)

My Hemi didn't even have to roar all that much, it was just over idle pulling him out of that mess. Man I love my truck!!

Thanks, Dinny

I have used a file in the past and it worked perfectly.  Just go slow and use a square to keep it straight until you have a good start.  Above all, be patient.

I have used the file method and the tablesaw method as well. While the file method worked out well in the end, it does take a lot longer and aluminum tends to clog up the teeth on the file. 60 teeth or more on a 10" saw blade will give you a nice clean cut on aluminum .

I have bad news  :( :(.....I can't find that scope rail anywhere. It was a good excuse for me to clean my man cave, I even vacuumed the carpet, still didn't find it the vacuum bag. ::)

I will keep looking, but I may vaguely remember putting it on a barrel that I sold a few months ago.

Gene, it's yours my friend if I ever find it. FWIW, you may have to file one if you're in any kind of rush.

Sorry, maybe I should have kept quiet until I had it in my hands. :-X

Thanks, Dinny

Check the FAQ's like tim suggested. There are a couple of us with EASY mods to this base!

Dinny that's okay I figured out a way to do it.

CW I did check the FAQs and now I have an excuse to get a table saw.

I ended up buying a 4 1/8" by 5/8" thick metal grinding wheel and an attachment for my drill. It doesn't come out the prettiest but it's nothing a black sharpie and scope rings can't cover up. I was also thinking about a carbide blade for my cordless circular saw but didn't see any at home depot, so went with the grinding wheel.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the input!
