.22 Hornet on SB1?
« on: February 21, 2010, 10:05:12 AM »
Hello everyone,
I know it has been talked about previously, but I can't remember what the answers were. Is it safe? Do I need to take the firing pin size into consideration when I decide which primers to use? Pros and Cons?

BTW, I like to use BR small rifle primers, about 12grs of H Lil Gun and a 40gr bullet.

Thanks, Dinny

I doubt you will have any problems at all with either size firing pin, especially if you use the thicker primers.  Larry

With the higher pressure loads and softer primers the primer will back up into the firing pin hole and will make the action hard to open. I use 13 gun and a 34 or 35 grain bullet with rem 7 1/2 and have no problems with that load.

The Rem #7 1/2 primers did that to me yesterday. Today I will try CCI BR-4 primers to see if it persists.

What's an example of a thicker SR primer?

Thank guys, Dinny

I agree with the previous replies, as long as you don't have primer problems, it should work fine. I had my Hornet barrel on an SB1 Pardner frame when I first got it, using small rifle primers w/Lil'gun in Rem brass, no problems. I used Larry's Hornet adapter barrel in my 12ga USH which has the large firing pin with small pistol primers with the same load, it worked fine also, accuracy was excellent ta boot!!

Using max H110 loads are where I had the most sweeling of primers.
