1895 loads
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:13:59 PM »
So, I started the love affiar with the 45-70 with a little handi rifle and liked it soo much I saved for like a year and finally got an 1895. I have only shot the hornady lever revolution 325 and the winchester 350 grain. The hornady is real cool, it is basically in the kill zone out to 200 yards. I am thinking of using this for elk, anyone used this round for elk? Any reccomendations on factory loaded ammo? I have thought about garret superjack, but it kinda spendy. EJ

The only factory ammo I use is the Remington 405 grain load.  The bullet is heavy and strong enough to do the job.

ejpaul1 -

If you don't handload,as sounds to be the case, I would stick with the Hornady loads.  f you want to pay a bit more I like the Buffalo Bore 350g loads.  I do handload and so don't shoot factory ammo, but I do have a hnting load that uses the same Speer 350g bullet as the Buffalo Bore and runs about the same velocity.  Recoil is stiffer than the Remington/Winchester/Federal factory loads but I'd use it out past 250 yards on elk.  Zero 3" high at 100 and a hold high on fur at 300 is a top-o-the-heart kill shot.

Coyote hunter, I do reload, but not for this one. I really dont have time for any reloading period. If I do, I might hook up with you on the matter. For now, I'll keep with hornady. THX.

Keep pm mind that the Hornady brass isn't reloadable and the rubber bullet is meant for deer.

Really? I didnt know hornady brass wasnt reloadable. I have never tried it but thats a good nugget of info to hang onto. You dont think the hornady will penatrate an elk? I really dont know. The only other hornady bullets I use are SST's and they are a drastically different bullet. Locked and with a platic tip for initiation. They do fine on cow elk so long as they arent going like 3200 upon impact. I usualy step up to an interbond for such work. I actually dont even use them in my 7mm, for some reason the 139 grain flavor doesnt shoot worth a dern in that rifle, now the 154's are a different story, they shoot beautifully. I know it happens, but it still dont completly understand why. I have other 140 grainers that shoot great in that gun. I digress,,,,,,,,,,

Why do you say that? All of the other Hornady brass I have seen is reloadable.

the hornady brass, from what I understand,in the leverevolution in 45-70,is shorter than standard
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

Quite a bit shorter.  You can reload it with Hornady's rubber bullets.  That's about it.

If the brass is shorter, all you need to do is use the Lee factory crimp die with the bullet loaded to the same OAL as you have been using.

There's no reason not to reload it.

Gosh, I guess I will have to quit using that Hornady brass that I have been using with both 300Hp and 405 SP Rem bullets.  I realized that this brass was a little shorter than my WW brass but have loaded the Hornady many times with no problems and shot it in both my 1895 and my Handi.  Now you have went and told these rifles that they shouldn't be shooting it. :D

Quite a bit shorter.  You can reload it with Hornady's rubber bullets.  That's about it.

You could also reload it with Speer 350's, which are an excellent bullet.  Might want to back off max powder charges a tad.

The Hornady LE brass is a lot shorter.  Say what you will it's like a .45-70 short.
