Zero Production Month
« on: February 11, 2010, 03:46:44 PM »
Well I called H&R today to inquire about the availability of a 30-30 barrel. Spoke to a nice gentleman named Andrew. He stated that they are back ordered and that there are no barrels being made until March. It doesn't matter the caliber. I asked if this was standard them shuting down for a month. He replied that he wasn't sure, but thought that it was. I also inquired about two other barrels 7mm-08 and 308 just to see if they had them in stock. All of them out of stock. He stated that just about all of their accessory barrels are out of stock. I sure hope it's worth the wait.

This makes sense... As I have contacted every dealer within a reasonable distance of me and no one can find the rifle I want in stock. Well Thanks for posting this. At least I know that I can stop looking until march.  :-\

I saw a .270 and a .223 in Wal-Mart, Escanaba, MI last weekend....both with the "No Name" scope.  If I recall correctly, they were tagged at 298.00.

I saw Handi-Rifles at an Academy and 2 Walmarts this week and at a small town hardware store last weekend. Granted, only 2-3 guns at each place.

Our Walmart has Handis.

Ok here's the question. The calibers it seems I can not find are 30-30, .308, and 7mm-08. I can find used 30-06 and 223 all day long. I can also find new 30-06 , 223, and 243. Why is this so? are the calibers I'm looking for that popular that they sell out quickly, or do they not make as many of them as the others? Is it perhaps a time of the year thing, or just my usual bad luck? It really doesn't matter just curious.

I have been wondering the same thing, because I have been trying to track down a new .308 for weeks with no luck.

H&R stated the end of 2008 that 2009 production would be limited to their best selling offerings, so the limited offerings you're seeing are just that. The only exceptions to that are the special order firearms like Dick's and Gander. ;) It's also the reason why Remington is building a new barrel production facility in Ilion for H&Rs, having to rely on Marlin for barrels is also limiting production, the new facility was scheduled to start production later this year, however I never learned the exact schedule or if it's changed. :-\

Tim,
Is this months no production normal or is it perhaps the new barrel factory coming on line and a surplus of our guns in all calibers will be filling all the stores. Either way we'll know at the end of March.

My guess on that is this is tax time, they purposely allowed their inventory to be as low as possible to decrease their assets for tax purposes, considering the economic state right now, I'm sure it makes a big difference in their operating costs.
