BC Ladder Sight
« on: February 01, 2010, 09:16:27 AM »
Hi all,

This is pretty spendy imo.  Is it worth it?  Any lower cost alternatives?

Thanks.

Brownell's sells the Smith sight for less, there are several other sights in the Long Range sights link in the FAQs.

Just installed an 1892 Krag sight that I picked up at a gunshow for $10.
I borrowed the idea from the FAQ's. Someone else did the same.  Hole
pattern is the same as the 2 outside screws for the scope base.  Have not
shot it yet, but I think I can make work.  These sites are pretty plentiful.

I like the Krag sight. I have just installed one on my 44 mag barrel. I have the Smith sight on my Winchester 94/30-30 Legacy, 26" octagon barrel.
Between the two sights, I prefer the Krag.
I mounted the krag on the mid-barrel hole, I had to drilled and tapped one new hole. I replaced the front sight with the Williams Shorty sight.

Another very nice sight is a Springfield 1873 45/70 trap door sight. Not the Buffington, this one is smaller than the Krag, but same style. I have one and will install it on a BC 38-55 when I get one. This sight can be mounted on the rear scope rail holes. One new hole must be drilled and tapped.
I had it test mounted on my 44 barrel, it set to high and obstructed the rear & front sight when the hammer is down. To get a sight picture the hammer must be cocked. For my application using the 44 Mag., this was unconfortable under hunting conditions.
Just remember there is no windage with either of the sights I have. You must replace the front sight W/ one that is adjustable, thus my replacement to the Williams sight. Also the Williams can be had in various blade heights. If you mount a sight on the rear rail holes that front blade will be tall. That was another reason I prefer the mid-barrel mount position for the Krag.
