Walnut Stock Refinish Project--Done!
« on: January 24, 2010, 02:00:01 AM »
I just couldn't warm up to the plastic Pro Hunter stock, even though it certainly worked for reducing felt recoil.  So I purchased a used walnut stock set, and set about giving it a hand rubbed oil finish.  Here are the results, including the new grip cap I made.  The grip cap will be darkened as soon as I get some chemicals, which should subdue the jeweling.  Also plan on replacing the recoil pad with the Sims model.  Forearm is "floated" and the ears are relieved where they contacted the action.

Nice job!  I have refinished 2 or 3 myself.  It's a good way to save a little money, buying a scratched up stock and forearm for cheap, then refinishing it.  I like the oiled finish too!

x2 on the "Nice Job!" comment!

I've yet to learn to redo stocks on guns, but someday.

Nice pics.

That's very nice. My first thought upon seeing the pro hunter stock was "Good Lord, that's an ugly stock." I have your rifle's baby brother, a G2 Contender.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.  The Pro Hunter stock didn't do it for me, but the real kicker was the forearm.  It was contacting the barrel unevenly on both sides, and underneath.
Here's a better pic, showing the new Sims recoil pad, along with a nice Geno Denning custom hunting knife in desert ironwood.
