I took a buck with my 22 Hornet a few years back. I shot it in the lungs with a 45gr. hollow point and it absolutely flattened the deer. When I gutted him it looked like a grenade went off in his chest cavity. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot another one with it. It's all about shot placement.
I got a new 22-250 and I plan on using it this upcoming deer season. 22's are very effective on deer sized game with good shot placement.

I have taken 2 deer and 5 hogs with a 22-250 shooting 55gr BST and v-max bullets. Kills well with good shot placement (lungs) I tried the shot to the head thing on a hog once and never again. I put a 40gr jhp 22 mag. right below a 150 pound hogs ear from about 30 yards and only pist him off. >:( But he was disoriented enough to run in 20 yard circles till I could put 3 more bullets in his side and back. :o
