savage 10-fp
« on: February 11, 2010, 04:57:33 AM »
hi, im looking to buy a new rifle in 308 as my 243 and 50 need a new companion. i started looking around and the 10 fp seems to be the best for what little money i have. any thoughts on this rifle? i plan to use it for target shooting and maybe some hunting on my property. anybody know what kind of accuracy i could achieve out of this? also what kind of stocks would be good for it?

The savage's all seem to to shoot well, especially considering the price. I have a 10fp in .223 which routinely shoots 1/2 to 1 inch groups from the bench. Mine is an older model (before acutrigger) and I installed a timney trigger. Lot's of people don't like the stocks, they say they twist and cause accuracy problems. I think this is mainly a problem when using a bipod. I only shoot mine from the bench and haven't had any problems.

I have two 10FP's.One is .223 the other .308.They're capable of as good acuracy as you are. Both mine will put ten shots that can be covered with a dime at 100 yards off the bags with loads they prefer.A little heavy for hunting but if all you're doing is carrying it to a stand to sit they're fine.Only real grouch I can make is the finish seems to pick up rust worse than other rifles especially in summer when I sweat more.Fresh coat of oil after use keeps 'em looking fine. For targets...you can't hardly beat it for the money.

I freely admit that I am completely biased and I prefer savage rifles, so take my advice for what it is.  I've only owned 223's and a 30-06.  All of which shot into groups of less than 1/2" with handloads.  Not much less than 1/2" for the most part but they still did it.  I've heard great things about the 10fp's and I'd expect that level of accuracy out of a 10fp with the accutrigger.

I own six Savage/Stevens rifles, one of which is a 110fp. The 110fp and a 12fv are the most accurate rifles I have ever owned.
Over the years I have owned Remington,Winchester, Ruger,Thompson Center, and an 03/A3 Sporterized. The only 308 in my battery is a model 10 Sierra, which is a light weight 20" sporter. It is MOA accurate if I Wait between shots. If I shoot 5shots in succession it will string vertically from the heat; however that string of shots will all be touching.
IMHO you can't do much better than the 10fp for any amount of money.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!
IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! GETTIN' OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES!!!
