Out of the box Savage MkII BTV
« on: April 19, 2010, 06:34:17 PM »
I just picked it up this weekend and slapped a scope on it.  I was pleased to see that it shot well with various rounds at 100 yards. It was around 50 deg. tonight with 5 or so mph wind blowing from my left to right. I was very pleased with the wolf match ammo and very displeased with all hyper velocity ammo. I shot Rem. yellowjackets, federal spitfires and CCI stingers. I didnt post all hyper velocity targets as they were sad.  I included a pic of my 20 round CCI blazer 300 yard bottom mildot holdover group with my scope on 7 power, any more than 7 and I run out of mildots.   I would encourage anybody looking for a no more than $400 comp. capable rimfire to give this one a try.

Looks very familiar to the one that I have, and it shoots just as well too.  My Savage Mk II was picked up used and had a BSA scope on it that I promptly broke.  I ended up buying a Bushnell Banner 6-24x and managed to put some rounds through mine.  Ironically it seems as if every Savage likes the Wolf stuff.  Mine averages under 1/4" at 25yds and under 1/2" at 50 with both Wolf rounds, Eley Sport, and SK Standard Plus.  Anything hypervelocity and the groups more than double in size.  I've now broken the Bushnell scope on it and have it sitting around waiting for me to put some better glass on it.

Here is the rig.

Thanks Diggler, I like mine as well. I allways wanted a better .22 rifle but could never bring myself to fork over the cash for a .22 till I saw the MKII BTV. I am buying a brick or two of the extra match as mine likes it the most. Dude, whats up with the breaking of the scopes thing?

Here is a pic of the Savage that got me back into shooting .22.  It is a older non accutrigger MKII that I painted. It is no were as refined as the BVT but I like it just the same.

I've broken a lot of scopes because I like to dial in my elevation.  Cheap scopes usually don't make it too long when you do this.

Its hard to beat the Savages for the money for what you get out of them.

We bought one about 2yrs. ago. I had been waiting for the Accu-Trigger and stumbled onto it at Gander Mtn just before Chistmas. I swear it was mismarked because we walked out with it for about $240. I had never even seen one but after handling it, and for the price, I wasnt going to 'think about it'. Havent seen any that cheap since.
It was a shooter right off. With my old Lyman All American 10X from the bench it will do 3/10ths at 50yd, for 3 shots, then I get nervous and pull one. I shot it offhand against my vintage match rifle c/w DST and scored the same on the ASSRA 50' gallery target. The Accu-Trigger feels a 'little different' but works well, breaking about 2.5#. I see in the Savage lit that their CF varmint(?) model can go lighter, maybe 1.5# if I remember right. Wonder if that is just a spring change?
We are VERY pleased with this rifle and recommend it without reservation.

While I don't have the nicer BTV model, I did have a MkII that was crazy accurate. I could easily trim small tree limbs with it at 75 yards and did a lot as well before ammo went up so much. I also have hit Groundhogs with it at 200yards, though it looses a lot of punch out that far. Nice rifles fellas, and some excellent groups.
