Worked construction for 20+ yrs, we were always laid off when it got cold and I'd usually rustle up some work then. Was in the middle of a bathroom remodel when a gentleman walked up and started asking questions. "Are you a contractor?", "Who's paying your industrial insurance?". He was from the state contractors' board and ended up fining me $280. I knew there was a dollar amount that an unlicensed party couldn't exceed, when I asked him about this, he said "Other than changing a light bulb, no." The truth is $500, my bill was $507, so I just went to court and paid the fine.

6 mos. later the judge, who I've known for years asked me if I'd do some work for him, on commercial property, no less. I reminded him of my court experience and he said there wouldn't be a problem. Our friendship didn't buy me any favors in court, but he expected me to believe it would now. Felt like I was getting set up, by a friend, and told him so.

I always have somebody wanting me to do some work, without a contractors' lic. I'm illegal. There's lots of guys out of work who'd love to make a few bucks and most are capable, but doing the only thing they can make money at without a license makes 'em a criminal.

OK, rant off

Yeah amen on HC costs. Lots of Americans practicing medicine in Mexico; quality work, US education, less overhead (licensing, fees, etc) so they can charge less and still make a healthy profit. Had a dentist in Kenya took the whole family to as I was self-insured. Under $100 for 4 checkups, couple fillings (latest ceramic), digital xrays, nicer office than some I've seen here.

There's too much artificial overhead in our country and it's not going to get easier. How many lawyers unemployed? Regulators, inspectors, union reps? All those whose job is to clutter up the system shouldve walked first in my estimation. They make their living off the labor of others.
