Superlight 243 accuracy
« on: January 16, 2010, 07:28:22 AM »
Hello all!  Nice forum!  I have a 243 superlight that my son uses for deer hunting .....I replaced the red dot scope with a Nikon Pro Staff 3x9 to use it for coyote hunting. I am shooting core lokts 100 gr ammo. I am having problems with accuracy. Right now at 25 yds its about a 2 inch group....I won't even move out to 100 with that size group.  Any suggestions ?  Should I change bullet weight?  Mounts are secure and rings are tight. Just took the scope off a 280 and it was holding under an inch at 100 so its not the scope either.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome! Read the Handi Basics 101 and the accurizing tips in the FAQs and Help sticky, but be aware that the light contour barrel heats up quick, shooting it hot doesn't work generally without forend bedding, after a good cleaning and good forend fit(FAQs) the first two shots should be under an inch, then all bets are off on the third shot, If you need more than one or two shots, you'll likely need to bed the forend or get a standard or bull barrel.

Thanks Tim!
I want to use factory loads for the time being and really wish this would shoot better. Do you suggest a different weight in the superlight?

First you need to make sure you're shooting the Handi correctly, the Handi Basics 101 cover that, oil or solvent on the latch/shelf account for most Hand inaccuracy issues. You might try the 80gr rems, they shoot ok in mine, but it shoots 100gr Speer handloads much better, at least the first two shots. Other factory loads to try are the Federal Power Shok 100gr and Fusion 95gr, they both shoot good in my 243 bull barrel, see the best factory loads link in the FAQs.

Groups shot at 100yds.
