Got My 357 Mag Handi Scoped
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:24:28 PM »
I put a Nikon ProStaff 4X32mm Rimfire scope on my 357 Mag Handi. I mounted it with a set of
Warne Maxima medium matte rings. Next month it's getting reamed out to 357 Rem Max.
I really like that Nikon scope. Excellent clear glass. No problem taking deer size targets out
to 100+ yards with this setup.  ;D

I put a Nikon ProStaff 2x7 on mine.  I went with every intention of buying the 4x32 but the 2x7 was marked down and was only $5 more than the 4x32.  I like that the parallax setting of the 2x7 is 75 yards.  The Nikon ProStaff scopes are great scopes for the price.

Are you at all concerned about a rimfire scope on what will approximate a 35 remington?

I don't think a 357 max will approximate a 35 Remington. :-\

Not even close when loaded to their full potential in a stronger action than the M8/81 and leverguns.  ;)

Spanky,
Tim likes his super 35 specifications and uploading older rounds like the 35rem to its true potential is a nice way to reinvent a grand old caliber like the 35 Remington or the 257 Roberts or the 32/20. These where created in a time when steel used in our firearms wasn't what it is today and the firearms designs wasn't up to the strength of today's actions.
BUT the statement was made that the 357maxi can approximate the 35 remington ballistics... Well I'll tell you that if you compare the 357 maximum loaded to SAAMI specs and shoot it in a rifle barrel of the same length as a SAAMI spec loaded 35 remington... the 357 maximum will slightly exceed the grand old 35 remington.  My maxi with under a max load of 1680 powder and a 180 hornady SST bullet will net me just over 2200 fps. This same bullet from a 35Remington moves along at just under 2200 fps. Now its not enough to crow about, but in the finite, finger pointing world we live in, the maxi exceeds the remington. Remember, the maxi is a pistol round, loaded to much higher pressures created in 1983, while the 35 remington was created over 100 years ago for a semi automatic rifle. So just putting a maxi into a longer tube gains you 400+ fps. Modern powders and careful loading gets you even a bit more.

SO, YES the 357maxi approximates the ballistics of the 35 remington... it even exceeds it!!

This stuff would be more appropriate to compared to the 357 Max at maximum book loads. Rather than ammo tuned down for a Remmy 8. I doubt that the Max could come within a 100 yards of this performance.

Here are some interesting terminal bullet performance tests done from a 20" M336 35 Remington with several bullets that could be used in the Max, the 180gr Speer FN runs 2300-2380fps in the 35 Rem.  ;)

The only reason they call it a rimfire scope is because the parallax is set at 50 yards which is perfect for a Handi or a levergun IMO.  The 2-7X32 is called a shotgun scope for the same reason.

Great scopes IMO

The 2-7X32s are so reasonable I buy them instead.

  Wasn't the original 357mag load a 158gr hardcast at about 1900fps?

Duly noted!

I have no experience with w/ Nikon scopes.  Rimfire scopes are usually a bit more frail that those made for shotgun or CF.  After reading how the handiholics describe their 357 max guns, I thought they were able to kill, skin and butcher a hog/deer/bear.  You need a stout scope for such a cartridge.   :D

The 2-7X32 is a great scope. On this one though I went with the 4X32 for simplicity. I have a bad habbit
of fiddeling too much with varible power scopes. Especially ones with an a.o. With a fixed power scope
it takes that out of the equation. I'm pretty comfortable with a 4X for the type of shooting I'll be doing
with it. Also from what I've read & heard the 357 Max has a pretty reasonable recoil. It's not a 500 S&W
or a 45-70 with full house loads. I think the 4X32 will hold up just fine.

My dad used a 4X Nikon (pre-Monarch) that I bought for him on his .270 BAR for well over fifteen years.  The only reason it came off that rifle was that I put a 3x9 Monarch on it that I caught on sale.  A friend told me he has used the same scope on his .270 since the late 1960's.

Your better 4x scopes like Nikon, Leupold and others will hold up with no problem.

sm bob, talk to me in inches on that shot group.  just when i had my mind made up to buy a complete new 223 for coyote, i stumbled into this web site and learned about 357 on sb1.  a quick call to 1871 confirmed it, but im concerned about accuracy at 100+ yards. would also like to know if those are hand loads or factory.  thanks

John, I've got 11 Handis, the two .357s I have are still the most inherently accurate of all of them. One is reamed to .357 Maximum.  Get it and don't worry about 100 yards, it will do that easily.  Ream it to Maximum and you'll be able to take deer sized game out to 200 easily.  I  don't handload yet, but the .357s seem to digest whatever factory load I feed them....from cheapos to rich.  Dont be surprised if you cloverleaf .357s and Maxis at 100 and .38s at 50.  They shoot.  Your .38s will shoot a little high.  Good luck with your baby.

Yep my .357's ( I have three) will shoot an inch or less at 100 don't much matter what bullet or load, At 50 it pretty much makes one ragged hole. 8)

John,
To tell you the truth I haven't shot it yet, so I can't say how it groups. Several of the guys here have
357's and 357 Maximums so I will let them fill you in on that.
