Sportster accuracy
« on: December 14, 2009, 01:39:17 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a sportster in .17hmr. Has anyone had or gotten one that's not a good group shooter? Don't mind the tinkering just not on this particular one. I may get just a frame and let the factory fit the barrel's, Do they do the same job as a prodution rifle?

i have the heavy barrel, from the factory, in .17HMR that was fitted to my frame by the factory and it's not very accurate at all.  :( ...it could just be me and something i am doing wrong.

i have, in fact, set it aside for a while to mull over what to do. hopefully i can figure out what it is that is the problem; me or the barrel.

i have a .22 mag barrel that shoots wonderully from the same frame.  ???  it's not a 'tack driver' per se, but is, none the less, very acceptable for hunting.  8)

i believe that the barrel is so heavy, it creates problems some how...

where i like the .17HMR, in this case, i may just stick to .22 WMR

   Darn dwalk i hate to hear that. I have had one for about four years now. Haven't shot it yet. I bought six boxes of ammo for it. Paid $9.95 for them then. A friend of mine had one. He was shooting black birds in his back yard while some guys were putting a new roof on his house. One of the roofers made him an offer for the gun that he couldn't refuse. He gave me five boxes of ammo marked $11.95. Sure can't buy ammo for that price now.

You can usually get 17hmr ammo from Midsouth starting at $10 and Cabelas had a sale starting at $11. Ammo prices are falling. Does not make sense but they are.

No prob. Cabelas has all sorts of coupons and points too, which effectively gets the price to under $10 if you buy enough.

Wife gave me one two years ago.  I precleaned it then mounted a scope.  Once I got the scope zeroed, I haven't done anything but shoot it.  Does not matter what ammo I shoot they all hit the same spot.

 My .17 HMR sportster is really accurate. I have noticed it prefers the 17gr V-max bullets over the 20gr HPs....and the Hornady Vmax cartridges most of all.

 I have a 17 HMR and its wonderfully accurate. I bought one for my Pop and his shoots better than mine. Then I got a 17M2.. Now this baby can shoot!!  I was SO impressed, I bought a second barrel!!  That one shoots just as well!!  I have a fixed 4X Leupold rim-fire on one and a 2x7 rim-fire scope on the other. I have a 3x9 AO Lupy on the 17 HMR. I have done nothing to these barrels, sans shoot them.

Now my 22LR that was another story... I got pitiful patterns from it. I mean bad, like tennis ball @ 25 yards. That was until I added one of those awful looking barrel DE resonators from simms labs. Now this thing is a one hole shooter, NO DUDU!!!  I don't like the way it looks, but the darn thing works!!!

I have to agree with CW. I have a 17hmr and its a great shooter but the 17M2 is even better. CW did you try the deresonator on the HMR or the M2?

My 17hmr handi has been shooting better then MOA since day one most groups are better then 1/2 MOA. I have done nothing to it but shoot it, don't even hardly clean it. I love the gun so much it outshoots my Anshutz in .22lr at every yardage. All that for 1/5th the cost. I have a Bushnell legend 5-15x scope on it which works just as good as the rifle ;D

IMHO there is no better .17hmr for the money or even close money

Buy one you cannot go wrong with it

Glad everyone is getting good groups from their 17HMR and 17 Mach 2.  I have a sporter in 17 M2 and I can't get it shoot worth a darn.  At 50 yards, I'm lucky to get 2 inch groups.  I was all reved up about the talk on the accuracy of the 17 M2 but not mine.  I'm shooting CCIs but I guess I'll try something else.  I have a Savage bolt in 17 M2 and it does shoot 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards.  Oh well...........I guess the sporter in 17 M2 will be a safe queen.

That is unbelievably bad for a .17 Mach2 or HMR. I suggest you check the crown for something that bad. You could always return it to H&R or sell it as a "non accurate shooter". Perhaps if H&R could not make it shoot well, and since they are no longer making .17 Mach2's they might offer you a different caliber, a .17 HMR, or .22 Mag. All the best of luck with it....<><....:)

Tony;
   I'm sure they probably all differ, buty I get my best .17HMR groups from Hornady V-Max.

   CW;
  This deresonator is news to me..tell us about it. Does it fit standard or bull barrels best ? What is the principle behind those ugly lumps ?

Thanks CW;
  That looks like a bull barrel, does it fit a standard H&R .22 mag barrel ? My .17 HMR shoots great, but I might like to try one on my .22 mag.

Its a std 22LR barrel. I picked it up rite here on GBO!!!

The de-resonator (rubber thingie), will fit most any barrel. There are two sizes. If you have a front site, it could be difficult to install.

I didn't put the Sims LimbSaver Barrel De-Resonator on my Sportster 22 WMR barrel, as when I sighted in only using my Harris bipod for support while using CCI FMJ ammo I found it plenty accurate at 100 yards.

Sighting in at 100 yards, I shot the center of this target on the barrel that also showed a nice group that I finished off with in the right upper corner of the target.
