Ordered my 260 yesterday
« on: January 04, 2010, 02:24:54 AM »
I ordered a Model 7 CDL 260 yesterday. What kind of perfomance can I expect out of the box? Will I have to float the barrel and glass the action to get it to shoot? What factory ammo seems to shoot the best and what kind of loads seem to work the best through them? Any info would be great.
Thanks in advnce

As to ammo you'll have to let the rifle tell you what it likes. I used only reloads and Nosler Custom ammo in mine. It liked the Nolser 100 PT and 120 BT both very well.

Generally speaking with the thin barrel Remington rifles you DO NOT want to float that barrel they shoot best with the factory pressure point. Now you might or might not need to relieve the barrel channel a bit depends on whether it has even or uneven fit.

Most times with Remington rifles I drop the trigger pull to around three pounds and shoot them. Occasionally one comes thru with fore arm pressure on one side of the barrel, not often mind you but it happens. If so you'll need to relieve it or just let Remington replace the stock which I've done once on an LSS Mtn. Rifle in .260. My CDL Model Seven .260 needed nothing more than the trigger work to shoot well.

Every rifle is an individual when it comes to how well they shoot and what ammo they prefer.  Some will shoot about any brand of ammo with acceptable accuracy, others are very picky.  You will just have to see what your rifle likes.

Personally, although I handload for all my guns I have had good success with Federal Fusion factory ammo when I use the store bought version.  Often times I pick up a box of factory ammo to use for sighting in a rifle, and to generate some brass to start working on a suitable handload.

I would try several brands of ammo or handloads before I would consider messing with the action or barrel bedding.  Just make sure your gun is clean and the action / scope mounting screws are all snug before you head to the range.

If you find that the accuracy doesn't meet your needs, now is the time to consider options such as bedding.

The best to you with your new .260
