Opened some eyes yesterday!
« on: January 04, 2010, 07:03:03 PM »
Went shooting with some fellas yesterday and were shooting at various ranges
out to 250 yards. They were popping away with 270s and 308s so I went to
the truck and brought out my Zouave. Loaded 60 grains of 777 behind a 480 grain
minne' ball. my standard load and touched it off at their 250 yard target.
Much to their surprise (and mine honestly) a nice .58 caliber hole appeared
at about 8 oclock on their target. No Way! one of them said, Open sights
at 250 yards! then they all wanted to shoot it too. Might have made some
converts to muzzle loaders! ;)

Nothing like the smug satisfaction you get from knowing your rifle and what it is capable of doing.

I have had more than one look down their nose at me and my weapon choice over the years...these were usually the same ones who would fire five or more deer slugs to harvest their venison.
This usually changes though once you build up that long string of one shot kills.

Those aren't lucky shots. They are a culmination of years of practice and experience along with the proper alignment of the planets. :D

My .50 hawken is one of thoes left handed cabelas models that I took the sights off of, filed in dovetails and installed a nice buckhorn rear sight and a more period front.

With 65 grains of 2F behind a PRB, using the the top of the buckhorns as my reference for a rear sight, I will be pretty close elevation wise at 200 yards. (There is a lot of burnt powder behind that knowlege) I put a nice .490 hole, almost dead center in 2'x2' chunk of tin at 200 yards to the amazment of some friends with scoped rifles.

The dead center part did involve a fair amount of luck as there was a slight breeze and I wasn't sure of the range. I just stood up and said wait till you see what I can do when I have my glasses on. It really is a smug satisfation.

Early last summer my step son invited me to go shooting with his friends. There all in their middle 20's and me in my late 60's. Couple guys had 44 mags and were having trouble hitting at about 35 yds. Took my 7 1/2 in Red Hawk with the one hole ragged sight and started shooting at 100 yds, Everybody had to try that. Then broke out my 54 cal, and loaded 80 grs pyrodex select and a  PRB, and was hitting a 5 gal bucket at 100 yds. Everybody had to try that. One of the probs they had was understanding set triggers. Couple stray shots down range. One  guy was so fascenated he wanted more info right now on loading and shooting B/P. Let him load and shoot about 10 more shots with him doing the loading.  (stood over him every load to make sure he got it right) He was sold on B/P shooting right then and said he had to have one. Under stand SANTA brought him one for Christmass.
