308 for christmas
« on: December 25, 2009, 02:50:19 AM »
Hey all, got my dicks sporting goods 308 bull all straightened up now . I am sitting here the owner of a 308 bull barrel dicks sporting goods exclusive. This one locks up tighter than fort knox and fit and finish are very good also. After polishing and cleaning can anyone recomend any cheap ammo just to break in the barrel? I have been reading about surplus ammo and the more I read the more uncertain I am. Is it safe for my gun on not. If so please be specific on what brand. After break in what ammo and weight are giving you the best results. THANKS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Good surplus ammo costs about the same as cheap Federal hunting rounds from Walmart or Winchester White Box 7.62 when it goes on sale (fairly often), unless you buy tons of it. Guys also break in their barrels with metal polish like Flitz of JB (boring I know).

This is good advice!  I haven't ever been a fan of surp ammo in any flavor. Some accelerate the process with bore polishing.

Basically, the bores condition is barrel specific, IE like you compared to anyone else you are unique, similar yet not the same. No two firearms are the same either. The ammo that they like and the way that they shoot it is only found thru trial and error. That's the fun part!!

Good luck,

We started my son in laws 309 off with Winchester white box from Wally World.  Simply gave the barrel a good cleaning and began shooting.  Within 50 rounds we were getting 3/4" groups.  That may be all you need.

Great round and you will have fun with it!  Glad to see you got it finally resolved, and a new rifle!

Just a reminder, and you probably already know this, but to make sure the latch shelf, and chamber, are wiped clean of excess oil.

These Handi's don't like a lot of oil!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

+1 for the JB and polishing the bore.  That is what I did to my .223.

I broke my .308/Handi in shooting 5 rounds, then a rod & patch down the bore. I did this for 50 rounds with a cool down between. After the 50, I cleaned the bore/W Hoppes and then a tight patch with JB bore paste. After this cleaning the bore is very bright & smooth
The bullets I reloaded for the break-in were 147 gr. FMJ's I pulled many years ago from some Mil-Sup .308. I needed the cases for hunting fodder at the time.

She's a shooter now. ;)

I have the same gun as you and I did the JB bore paste thing to it and then started the sighting in process with the Wolf 150 gr ammo. I think I put about 30 rounds of that through it and then switched to rem core lokt 150 gr. I've been getting about 1.5" groups at 100 yds. That's pretty good for me shooting off one of the Caldwell bags. I got lucky a few years ago and happened into our local Kmart, I was just going to grab a box of 308 cause I was running low. When the cashier rang it up it was $6 so I asked why and he said they were selling it off because they were going to start carrying Winchester instead of Remington. I ended up buying ever box of 308 they had, so I'm still set for a couple more years before I have to buy anymore. Maybe a little less than that now that my son is shooting a 308 also.
