SB1 or SB2 ?
« on: December 18, 2009, 06:10:44 PM »
I have several shotgun frames, and two or three SB2 or rifle frames.  all are older than the current company will add barrels onto. after examining the frames I have one that Im wanting to build on. how can I be shure its an SB2 frame. It has an AU prefix to its serial#[ made in 1980]. it is fully machined, inside and out.  the firing pin diameter is.0710. It also has the color casehardened finish, the same as my topper 158 that came with 3030 and 20 ga barrels.the person I spoke to at marlin would only say that this was too old for them to add a barrel too. Id like to know that its hardened before I put a centerfire barrel on it. I read the FAQ section and didnt find anything that says yes or no . Any ideas? DR

SB1 and SB2 frames were not made until 1987, before that they were all cast iron frames only.  I wouldn't put any barrels on them that weren't offered on them originally, that precludes any high pressure barrels, 30-30, 44mag. 357mag 22 hornet were used on the 158 for example. Many of their shotgun frames were not meant for rifle barrels at all. Read the warning in the FAQs by the fella that put a 223 barrel on an old shotgun frame, Can I put a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame?

What barrels were you thinking of adding?

Hornet would be a great choice, a modern SB2 frame would be the best choice for the 223.  ;)

Less pressure than the 44mag, I think the only reason H&R won't fit it to SB1 frames is because it's too easy to rechamber to Casull of 460S&W.
