New kid on the block finally gets a Handi...
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:48:40 PM »
Well, on Friday I picked up a NEF Handi Dandy Rifle in 30-06 (SBII, Non bull barrel) with the survivor stock set and the rifle has been fired but judging by the breech face, muzzle, bore and general finish not much at all. There were a couple smudges on the rifle that wiped off when I cleaned the barely dirty bore, but not a bit of visible wear and not so much as a single scratch anwhere. The Barrel is SN marked to the frame and it appears the trigger is unmolested as of yet. I stumbled on it on GB and it was in my home town of all places so I had a chance to suss it out prior to bidding.

I was looking for a sub $200 45-70 when I found this and the thing I need to find is another scope mount. The previous owner goobered up the one on the rifle by grinding a rather sloppy relief I reckon it is for a scope bell or power adjuster.

Anyone got an inexpensive yet versatile mount they can recommend or they wish to unload? I am planning on mounting a Leupold VXIII duplex that has been unemployed since selling my Marlin 1895.

If the rifle shoots well (have read a lot of the FAQ's) it will 'prolly get used next year for dear and general mayhem at the range as I currently have a lot of reloading fixins in '06 as I do in 45-70, 30-30 and 44 Mag. If it stinks accuracy wise, it will get the 45-70 barrel sooner rather than later and also another stock set.

Any a big fat howdy do to ya'll and feel free to chime in with any ideas.

Be safe
Patty

WELCOME and congratulations!!

Maybe some careful application of JB weld or something similar. As long as we are just looking for aesthetics that is...

Hey there CW... They flat ground the aft most lug clean off the mount. i tried to see if the Warne QR ring could gain purchase but no dice. As for looks, it will see a fair amount of use and perhaps benign neglect so appearance is pretty low on the list of priorities.

I would be chuffed to bits to get about 1 moa out of the 30-06 barrel. I have a LOT of bullets to try and a pretty vast selection of brass (I sell brass to fund my shooting sport adventures), powder and primers.

Given my current high degree of thriftiness (read pretty poor right now) I need to get it right the first time. I am really looking forward to saving my pennies and getting a 45-70 barrel before next summer, I hope...

Be safe and thanks for the thoughts
Patty

I know the answer to this one!  I bet your scope base looks a lot like this one.  They come that way from the factory, I don't know why the idiots at Weaver make them that way, but they do.  Just order a base that is not made by Weaver and it will work.  Larry

Hi and Welcome.

I had to do two Weavers exactly like that.  Fortunately, the scope mounts cover it.

Trotterig:

My mount has had the 2 nublets just forward of the ground area in your photo missing. If the freebie deal works out with RangerJ I am going to pay it forward with my current mount to a fellow here that asked if I want to sell it to him for a shotty project he is working on.

Do ya'll reckon that Leupold QRW or Warne QR medium rings would work with the Leupold VXIII 1.5x5 or would I need to go to the high version. Currently the scope has a set of low Warne QR's on it from when it was on a Marlin 1895 a while back. I like the ability to swap scopes with a cheat sheet for each other rifle. It worked really well doing this on a couple Marlin's in the past and I would plan on doing so with the future 45-70 barrel I want for this frameset.

Be safe and thanks again for the ideas and help.

Welcome to our group!  The medium rings should work fine with that scope, they have a small bell and shouldn't interfer with the hammer.  DP

I'm still confused as to what was actually altered/ground off??

The Med rings will work fine, I'll bet the lows will as well!! Altho I don't have a XVIII on  handi, they aren't any larger then the VX II or VARI X II scopes I have mounted with Leupold LO rings...

CW, If ya look at Larry's pic of the Weaver base, I'm thinkin it's the pieces between the flat area and the groove that the ring base bolts would fit in.  Sounds like someone thought the extra support on the back of the rear ring base wasn't needed.  DP

OK, Thanks for the pic!!

Well if you need the rearmost slot, than its not going to do allot for you is it? If you could use other ones, color it with a black magic marker and forget about it. If you need that position, toss it and get another, there is no fixing that one...

Good grief Charlie Brown!  That was done by a butcher for sure.

Jerry:

I laughed about the hack job on the mount when I saw the rifle. I reckon it could be used if your scope was pretty short between the bells. Being that it was for sale locally I had a chance to check it out before bidding. I really wanted a 45-70 but for the price it was a deal given what the dealers are wanting. Hope it is a shooter, if not it will go back to the factory for the 45-70 barrel pretty quickly or traded for one if I find one to trade for.
