ruger mkII frontier rifle
« on: January 30, 2010, 12:07:04 PM »
Today at  the gunshop I was looking at a frontier rifle in 7mm-08, and I think I really like it. It has the black&green laminate stock with blued metal. Price was $550. I really like the dimensions of the stock, and the 16" barrel doesn't scare me away. The only scope I would consider for this rifle would be a Leupold I.E.R.2.5x. The dilema that I have is that I have zero experience with a scout rifle set up. All of the reviews say this the fastest way to acquire a target, especially on moving targets. Most of my hunting is in the central Adirondacks, still hunting. The shots usually come quick and at relatively close range. I think this rig might be close to ideal. But I was wondering, with a 22' field of view at 100 yards it seems that with this scope it may be hard to find your target quickly, or am I wrong? If any of you guys have a frontier rifle or any type of scout rifle for that matter please chime in, I'm real curious about them and I would like to hear a few opinions before I buy one.

you shoot a scout scope with both eyes open and you can see everything.

I have a scout scope on a Marlin 444.  I have the same Leupold you are talking about.  I really do like the setup.  It is a little different than the traditional scope mount.  First thing I noticed was at the range the first day I setup and sighed in.  I was shooting at a 100 yard target and I wasn't sure if I liked it.
I took the rifle to the field that same day AND TOOK A NICE 10 POINT!!
I found the scope works very well in the woods.  Like the last post you shoot with both eyes open and it works.  My shot was around 90 yards and I had no problem with the shot.  I think for thick heavy cover it is the ticket.  If you hunt like I do (and I think most hunt this way) you spot the target with the eyes and then try to put that target in the scope.  With the typical scope setup you need to take your eyes off the target and then find that target in the scope.  With the scout setup you never take your eye off the target.  Just raise the scope into your view while watching the target.
