S&W Model question
« on: December 21, 2009, 02:20:22 PM »
I have a S&W revolver that I bought new in 1970.  How can I tell what model it is.  Thinking of getting a pair of more comfortable grips.  It about jumps out of my wife's hands when she shoots it.  Stocks grips are walnut and very thin.

All S&W revolvers made after about 1957 will have the model number stamped in the crane cutout in the frame.

It will be marked as a "MOD XX-X" where the first two digits is the model number, followed by the dash number which is the engineering modification.

Hello Charles
After 1957 S&W Marked all their Guns with Model Numbers in the crane area. It can be seen by swinging the cylinder out and is located on the frames flat surface area. It sounds like you have  a-J-Frame Air-Weight. These are the smallest frame revolvers made by S&W Post-1957. The Air-Weight Model's were a Model 37 as mine shown. They also made a Semi Hammerless Air-Weight model known as the Model 38. I have not had one of those but I have had the Carbon steel Brother Model known as the Model 49 and these were called a Body Guard Model Shown below my model 37 Air-Weight verion in a round butt configuration. They also made an Air-Weight in The Medium size frames known as the K-Frame and that one was a Model 12 Air-Weight. They came in Both Frame style of the square Butt and round Butt configuration in the-J-frame size.... Hammerdown

I'm not where the pistol is now so I can't look for the model number.  It is not the model pictured above.  Mine is a six shot, nickle finish, and has a 4" barrel.  I have the original box as well.  Maybe the model number is printed somewhere on the box.
